They both want out... admittedly they could stay but I know they want out as things stand. If they stay it doesn't mean they wanted to stay... as far as I'm concerned, cheerio.

I don't want to lose either player but I also don't want to retain any player, no matter how good, if he doesn't want to play for us.

**** 'em. There's not much Rafa can do other than try p*ss around the clubs trying to buy them.

I hope they stay but at the end of the day, I'm very unhappy with them.

i'll be sad to see him go but i cant blame alonso for wanting out after what happened last season.

Lets hope Rafa has two excellent players in mind to replace them

The more I know about Rafa Benitez, the more I believe in his ability to turn players into superstars. Gerrard, Torres, Alonso, Mascherano, Reina, Carragher, and even our good old Crouch, and many more players are at their best because of Rafa. He knows what needs to be done, and acts quick enough to achieve it.

I have no doubt in my mind that Rafa is capable of selling both players for 50m+ and building a new worldclass midfield partnership, the only question is when?

It's not just a matter of buying the right players, It's also about how long will these new players need to adapt to Liverpool's system, and to the whole Premiership. what makes it even harder for Rafa is that Barry is sold to Man city, which is a major blow for Rafa.

Who could have foreseen that we would win the Champions League in the same season that we sold Michael Owen?

We live in hope that Mascherano and Alonso's replacements will fit in quickly.

Dunk, heard any news on Javi Martinez?

Can understand Alonso wanting to go back to Spain after 5 years in England and after what happened last year.
But Masch has been supported by Rafa and let him go to the olympics and his form suffered in the beginning of the season.

Will be hard to replace the both of them and new players will have to learn the way Liverpool play football.

20 million plus Sneidjer for Alonso or
25-30 million for Masherano

Get Mata from Valencia; another holding midfield (give a couple of reserve team players more bench time) and possible a centre back like Steven Taylor from Newcastle

If Alonso still hurts from last summer i don't want him to stay, beacuse then he must be a real wuss. Don't get me wrong, he's a fantastic player and i really like him but he had a bad season 07/08, and you can't blame Rafa for trying to get rid of him and instedd try to bring in Barry. But as we all know that never happened, and Alonso had a fantastic season with us. Now he should be happy and think about the exciting season ahead, instead he goes around and thinks about things that happend a year ago....
But it would be a massive blow to lose both of them, and i really hope that rafa knows what he's doing if he let them go...

Felipe Melo, Lorik Cana, Mesut Özil should be among the list of players that would replace them....

terrible news. we will suffer if they leave. if they want to leave i agree, let them go.

i'm really annoyed with mash, we picked him from the gutter when he couldnt even get a game with west ham. no loyalty whatsoever. alonso has had a great 5 years here. i will be more sad to see him go. one of the best passers i have ever seen.

i just hope we get a decent transfer for them both. mash cost 18m so a fee in excess of 30m is what i expect.

replacements? difficult to know. sure rafa will pick up at least one kid from spain. i do like mata for left wing.

I truly believe that Jay Spearing could have a good chance in Mascherano's role. even though people say he's short, he's just 2 cm shorter than Mascherano, and is a better passer. also, Spearing started as a Centre Back before becoming a midfielder.

a Defensive midfielder's role is simple; break up the play, cover lots of ground, pass the ball. nothing flashy. Spearing could do a good job there.
