Although Dirk Kuyt has never been one of my favourite players, not having the type of touch , control and passing ability of many of the Liverpool greats, (although he has shown a better touch and passing at this World Cup) I have to admire his honesty and the statement he has just released on probably the biggest game he will ever play in.
It would have been easy for him to keep quiet, after his performances at the World Cup and see which clubs expressed an interest in offering him Champions League football, and an increase in wages, in one of the warmer cosmopolitan cities in Europe.
To declare he wants to stay, if the Manager so wishes, is a sign of somebody with pride and of putting the club before any short term gains.
Although I will be supporting Spain on Sunday, I offer Dirk all the success he deserves, both now and in the future.
Hopefully Gerrard and Torres will now follow suit and we can look forward with optimism.
Dirk, your Father (RIP) would be extremely proud of you, both as a fotballer and as a Man of his word.
