So news coming out that both Naby Keita and Ox have been left out of Liverpool's 25 man squad for the Champions League group stage.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has been sidelined since mid-July with a hamstring problem suffered during the pre-season tour in Singapore while Keita has missed the last four games with a muscle issue that has required specialist assessment???

Curiouser and curiouser because Keita's contract is up next summer and there's been little tidbits about Liverpool wanting to resolve Keita's contract and that they are in current negotiations to extend it. There's also been mutterings that PSG have been sniffing around wanting to sign Keita on a free next summer, they can't officially contact Keita or his Agent until January to potentially agree a pre-contract.

We know in the past Borussia Dortmund have expressed their admiration for Keita even tried to sign him when we originally got him...eventually! There's been rumours that Liverpool have reached an agreement with Borussia Dortmund to sign Bellingham this January.
It makes sense that Keita is part of that deal because keeping Keita out of the 25 man Champions League squad frees Keita up to play in the competition for Borussia Dortmund if they are still in it come January.

How spurious is a muscle injury? Keita came on as sub on 85 mins v Man City in the Charity Shield, then was not even on the bench for our opening game v Fulham and was then an unused sub in the Palace game. Since then he has not been in the squad which makes it all the more likely that we are wrapping him in cotton wool to make sure he is ready to be part of the Bellingham deal.

It all makes sense that we were robbing Peter to pay Paul in the last embers of the transfer window, looking so desperate and as though we haven't got 2 pennies to rub together!

Players are no longer cup tied in the CL after a transfer window, so not registering him for CL doesn't have anything to do with his potential transfer in Jan

this bellingham things is a huge gamble.
there is no guarantee that Dortmund will sell or he will agree to it. worse if our struggles continue and miss out on CL places.

That would be a great slap on Henry's face

In association football, a player who has appeared for a football club during a knockout cup but subsequently transfers to another club is ineligible to play for the new club in the remainder of that season's cup competition. Such a player is said to be cup-tied, i.e. tied to their original club for the duration of the cup tournament. They become eligible for their new club in the following season.

The rule is intended to prevent teams which progress in the competition buying talented players from teams which have already been eliminated, in an attempt to increase their chances of winning. It also discourages players whose chief priority is winning a trophy from requesting a transfer once their team has been eliminated from the competition. Since the introduction of transfer windows, which the cup-tied rule pre-dates, some have criticised the rule as outdated. Nevertheless, it remains widely applied.

Almost all cup competitions worldwide operate a cup-tied rule, but leagues do not (as leagues do not eliminate teams during the season). Cup-tied players are only prevented from playing in that specific competition, so for example a player who is cup-tied in the FA Cup may still be eligible to play in the League Cup (or vice versa). UEFA competitions are an exception: because teams can switch between the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League[note 1] during the season, UEFA has a more complex system for determining whether a player is cup-tied in one or both of those competitions.

UEFA operates European club football competitions, primarily the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League.[note 1] UEFA's regulations state that, with a few exceptions, players who play in any European club competition are subsequently cup-tied with respect to all European football for the remainder of the season.[1] On 27 March 2018, UEFA announced that it would phase out the cup-tied rule for the Champions League and Europa League, starting in the 20182019 season.[2]

The main current exception is the UEFA Super Cup, contested by the winners of the previous seasons' Champions League and Europa League. As this is effectively a prestige friendly with only one round, the cup-tied rule is seen as unnecessary. Representing a club in this fixture does not affect a player's eligibility in other UEFA competitions.[citation needed] Similarly, cup-tying did not apply to matches in the now-defunct pre-season UEFA Intertoto Cup, up to the semi-final round.

A further exemption applies: one player per club who would normally be cup-tied can be registered and eligible to play, so long as his previous club did not field him in the same competition. This means that players can represent two clubs in the Europa League and Champions League, but only a maximum of one player per club. However, if the first club switches into the same competition (e.g. transfers from the Champions League to the Europa League through finishing third in the group stage), the transferred player becomes ineligible. This can lead to some complex situations.

When are the 2022/23 Champions League draws?

Preliminary round: 7 June 2022
First qualifying round: 14 June 2022
Second qualifying round: 15 June 2022
Third qualifying round: 18 July 2022
Play-off round: 2 August 2022
Group stage: 25 August 2022

Round of 16: 7 November 2022 - If Keita represented Liverpool at this point he would not be eligible to play for any other club in the competition!
Quarter-finals & semi-finals: 17 March 2023

If Keita played Round 16 for Liverpool and transferred to any other club still in the competition in January, he would not be eligible to play for them!

This has been abolished, did you read the article from ESPN? I'll write it for you

This means that, for the first time, a player could play for two different clubs in the group stage and the knockout rounds of the Champions League, or the Europa League, in the same season. Players could switch between competitions in the past, but not stay in the same one with a second team.
