Historic match: Report from Liverpool's first game in 1892

The initial event on the programme of the new Liverpool club was brought off last evening, at Anfield-road, the attraction being Rotherham Town (Midland League Champions). Only a moderate number of spectators turned up to witness the encounter. Hannah won the toss and elected to kick with the wind; and amidst applause Councillor John Houlding started the ball.
Play ruled in favour of the Liverpudlians from the start, and McVean scored early from the left, while a little later Kelvin put a second through. Rotherham woke up, and came down smartly, Hannah removing Pickering in the nick of time. The home side pressed again and the game grew very one-sided, as from a foul close in the leather was scrimmaged through for the third time. McBride was very prominent at half-back, his checking being superb at times. Wyllie and Smith livened the proceedings with a fine spurt on the right. Miller shot in hard from Wyllie's centre but Wharton only partly cleared and Wyllie dashed in a scored easily. Continuing Miller raced away from the centre, but Brown pulled him up grandly and sent forward, Hannah effecting a fine clearance.
Liverpool continued to have all the play and with the interval close at hand Wyllie added a fifth goal with a fast oblique shot. At half-time the score was:- Liverpool 5 goals, Rotherham nil.
Resuming, the visitors made play and Ross was called upon. The pressure was maintained for some little time, but the home defence proved extremely sound, and Wyllie was able to get away from McLean's pass. Turner succeeded in checking the Liverpool right-winger this time, and sending well up, a hot scrimmage took place in front of Ross, who coolly picked up from the crowd of stamping feet and cleared. The visitors were showing up well now, the home custodian saving twice from Cutts. McBride again made himself conspicuous by his really clever tactics, and passing forward Kelvin only missed the goal by inches, while directly after McQue hit the bar.
The combination of the Liverpool men was very fair, and, besides shooting well, they shot often. The pace grew very fast towards the finish, Miller eliciting a round of applause by breaking clean through the halves and scoring a fine goal, the result of an individual effort. The visitors gained their only point through Leatherbarrow, who scored a simple goal just before the whistle blew.
