Sources: Liverpool have reached Jude Bellingham 'agreement' after new talks

Liverpool have a verbal ‘agreement’ with Borussia Dortmund sensation Jude Bellingham and he could even sign in January, sources have told Football Insider.

The German club have made it clear they will not sell the 19-year-old sensation this summer – we first revealed that on 21 April – amid strong interest from clubs led by Liverpool.

But Liverpool have been busy behind the scenes in recent months on having an agreement in place that could see Bellingham join as early as January of next year.



Manager Jurgen Klopp admitted on Friday he is in the market for a late-window midfielder signing after a U-turn prompted by his team’s wretched start to the new season.

That player is not expected to be Bellingham, even though Liverpool have made the capture of the England star a medium-term priority and have been laying the groundwork for a deal for some time.

It would take a monumental offer, the kind of £100million-plus bid owners Fenway Sports Group would be extremely unlikely to authorise – to force a change of stance from Dortmund.

A summer-of-2023 deal is more likely but the Merseysiders have discussed bringing forward a move to January of next next year.

Bellingham has been identified by the Liverpool recruitment team as the dynamic central midfielder capture capable of spearheading the team to the next level.

Extensive talks have been held behind the scenes with the player’s camp and Liverpool are confident they have convinced him to join with a verbal ‘agreement’ already in place.

As revealed by Football Insider (30 March), Dortmund are attempting to convince Bellingham to stay by increasing his salary and also signing his younger brother, the Birmingham winger Jobe Bellingham.

Birmingham have agreed professional terms with Jobe Bellingham, and he will sign the deal when he turns 17 on 23 September.

But the family’s plan is for him to join Dortmund when he has secured more first-team experience in English football.

His more famous elder brother has a contract at the German club that runs until the summer of 2025 and is already one of the star players in their team.

Bellingham had an outstanding 2021-22 campaign, scoring six goals and providing 14 assists from 44 appearances in all competitions.

Liverpool will pull off the “signing of the century” if they land Jude Bellingham from Borussia Dortmund.

That is the verdict of ex-Premier League striker Noel Whelan as he assessed the latest developments in the Merseysiders’ push for a new midfielder.

Football Insider revealed on Saturday (27 August) that Liverpool are making progress on landing Bellingham following extensive behind-the-scenes talks, although he would not join before January at the earliest.

The latest from our sources, after Saturday’s 9-0 pummelling of Bournemouth, is that Liverpool are working on landing a proven midfielder and hope to get a deal over the line in the coming days.

Whelan is in no doubt about the calibre of Bellingham, or of what he would bring to Jurgen Klopp’s team.

“You’re talking about an outstanding, once-in-a-generation midfielder who can do everything and is destined for the absolute top,” he told Football Insider.

“He has been learning his trade at Dortmund, a huge club, over the last few seasons and is their best player now Erling Haaland has gone.

“He’s already played 100 times for them and he’s only just turned 19, which is incredible. He’s running matches, winning matches with goals and assists, and is gathering brilliant top-level experience.

“It’s clear Liverpool need a midfielder who can replace Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Thiago [Alcantara], who have all been great players for them.

“Bellingham fits the bill perfectly. He is getting to a level where he would walk into pretty much any team in the world, that’s how good he is.

“If Liverpool can get him for less than £100million, that’s the signing of the century as far as I’m concerned”.

I don't know who we can possibly bring in this window?

With quite a few names bandied about who we have been linked with: Caceido (Brighton), Neves (Wolves) Barella (Inter), Tielemans (Leicester) and Laimer (RB Leipzig).

Caceido, Laimer and Tielemans played yesterday, Neves is in Wolves starting lineup today, Barella played for Inter last Friday so if any of those players were being considered or we were in talks about they'd likely not have played.

John Henry being at yesterday's game complicates things because if he was there to sign off on Klopp making more signings because of previous poor form then yesterday's result would give Henry pause for thought.

My guess is we've put Keita into the Bellingham sale, however Dortmund don't want to take a player who is currently injured and have in theory, agreed on a sale in January as long as Keita is fit.

Anybody in this window would be very last minute or a potential loan?

If anything we might sign thar Berge fellow from the lower division and Klopp will hardly pay him as we have seen before. Our objective is CL at the lowest possible expense

We need him now, this club loves to delay signings until the next window. Always happens. Frustrating club.

Fabrizio Romano, David Ornstein and James Pearce seem to be all in agreement basically saying Liverpool won’t sign a midfielder unless it’s the right player at the right price.

The window closes 11pm Thursday and we play Newcastle the night before on Wednesday, it's looking likely we will have to make do with what we've got until January.

Other sources say there is no deal in place. It's all speculation.

With Curtis Jones back in training apparently we don't need any new midfielder. When I see how much most other teams have had as net spend, I can't understand where our revenues are going. I have decided to take a back seat and just watch how things goes without any major expectation. Hopefully we at least finish higher than United so that the season is at least acceptable

Don't count on it - Man Utd have just strengthened with Casimero and Anthony - and finally dropping Maguire is like a new signing.

Youri Tielemans listed as "available" as Liverpool ponder midfield options

Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans has been described as "available" as Liverpool consider their midfield options in the days before the transfer deadline.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp made a public U-turn on his stance late last week as he admitted the club would look to strengthen in the engine room, however, it would still need to be the "right" player all things considered for Liverpool to complete their dramatic transfer turnaround.

According to Sky Sports' Melissa Reddy, Tielemans is one of the options the Reds could consider.


"Youri Tielemans profiles well and is available, but there clearly hasn't been enough credence in what he offers and how to integrate it within the specific functionalities of midfield," writes the Sky Sports reporter.

"If primary targets are not available - and there's no guarantee over them next summer either - then a short-term fix that has the tools to develop into long-term solution may work in this scenario."
