With Qatar hosting the World Cup they wanted to keep him as a top priority, so they gave him pretty much whatever he wanted.
They know they can sell to RM in a few years, not that they have to.
Strange move by Mbappe to stay, all the signs were that he wanted the move and wherever he ended up he was going to get crazy money, so that would not really be a factor I guess, but PSG is his hometown club, so maybe that swung it, similar to Gerrard being tempted by Chelsea, where he could have earnt/won more, but then decided to stay with us. No, Madrid couldn't match what he was offered by PSG Maybe he would earn more staying at PSG, but he was still going to earn crazy money at RM, there was talk of a $200million signing on fee and $600K a week. The fact is there is very little competition in the French League for PSG, so what's the point really, he needs to go and test himself in one of the top leagues like La Liga or PL. Why does he need to go and test himself elsewhere, PSG hasn't been too different to City in the CL. I think it's better for football for him to stay in Paris instead of going to RM. Did you ever say that SG had to go and test himself elsewhere when it looked impossible for us to win the EPL? I thought Gerrard should leave Liverpool before we won the CL in 2005, as a Liverpool fan I did not want him to leave, but I could not begrudge him the chance to win trophies like the PL that his ability deserved. As for Mbappe, he is not tested in the French league, PSG will win the league year in year out, then they struggle in the CL at the later stages as they are not tested regularly in the league, so it will be difficult for them to try and raise their game for specific CL knockout games. He has won all he can in France, played for his home town club and won the league/cup, so makes sense to me he moves to a more competitive league, whether Spain, England, Italy or Germany, but it looked like Spain he would be going to, whoever he joined he would earn huge money, so money is not an issue really.

It's not only money, but money is a big part of it. He is French and the big majority of the French fans want him to stay, that creates a lot of pressure, a bit similar to SG when he was about to move to Chelsea, even Shearer chose Newcastle over United. That said, he is still young and renewed for 3 years only, thus his options are still open. As for CL, yes PSG has not won it, but its a cup, City has not won it neither despite being the best team in the best league.

I agree, he has only signed a 3 year deal, so has kept his options open, he will only be 26 at the end of this deal, so will just be approaching his peak then. More players are doing this now, I can see players signing shorter term contracts, Kane could not join City last season as he had signed a 5 year deal with no release clause, now that deal has gone as City move onto Haalland, Pogba has let his deal run down, similar with Lewandowski, we are in a similar position with Salah & Mane. I can see us continuing negotiations into next season with them, though Mane has made a comment about announcing his decision after the CL final, so we will have to see how that go's.

I agree ecnirp, we are going to see a lot more 1 year extensions and 1 year deals much like the NBA. Players have more power now with their Agents holding clubs to ransom.
I wouldn't be surprised if this is what has been arranged with both Salah and Mane, just a year extension with both hitting their 30's and FSG not wanting to commit to bumper longterm deals on older players.
I would say though that both us and Man City are in a much better position than most clubs with us both having the 2 best Managers currently in World football. To me both Klopp and Pep are worth more than any player in either squad, their roles are far more important than any one player. If anybody should be getting paid much better it should be both Managers.
