We would have had to pay Werner big wages, I know he wanted to join us, but if his agent comes in and says Chelsea are offering £180K a week, we would have had to be very close/match it, he isn't going to sign for £120K a week with that offer on the table, his agent has to do something to earn that £12 million !!!! I understood that he had already accepted our proposal but we wanted to negotiate his release clause down with his club Until a contract is signed, it is negotiable, I don't know when we agreed his terms, none of us do, but I am guessing most of the top clubs in Europe had expressed an interest in him through his agent and probably said what they would be willing to pay him, so I am sure what we offered him would have been competitive with what the other clubs were offering. Even if we were his first choice, as we saw, he was happy to switch to Chelsea as soon as we were not moving for him this summer, it sounds like Chelsea were the only ones willing to pay his release at that stage, so the £180K a week would have been what his agent said was the deal I guess, as it was not a bidding war at that stage. https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football...-contract-wagesI rather think that he wanted to join us, talked to Klopp agreed terms as the transfer fee was already well known to everyone. However, when we tried to low ball (not the first time, we did the same with VVD but Edwards had to swallow his pride and pay the asking price, Coutinho sale did help), he asked his agent to find the best deal for him.

I agree he wanted to join us, he said as much in his comments, but that doesn't stop him/his agent negotiating a better deal with us if someone like Chelsea offers a better deal. We tried to low ball when the world changed with Covid, nothing wrong with that, it's Edwards job to get the best deal he can for LFC, should we just go around paying the price teams say they want? everyone negotiates the best deal they can for their club, selling or buying. I wouldn't blame Edwards though for this, I think that instruction came from FSG when Covid hit and football shutdown, I think they said renegotiate, I think we would have signed Werner for the release fee if Covid had not have happened. The VvD deal backfired and we actually ended up paying more for him 6 months later, that's the risk, but in the end it was worth it and we went on to become PL/European/World Champions.

Often players go to lower wages if they really want to play for a particular club, even the lower wages is not like they will end up poor, I think Werner wanted to play for Klopp and was reasonable, this is why the rumours were that he had accepted personal terms. It is when the deal didn't go through that his agent tried an auction and Chelsea did everything to get him quickly even if they had to pay wages above the odds. We all know that 48m was much lower than his true value. I rather think that FSG was thinking of selling Mane or Salah and make a big profit, however, the uncertainty made them rethink. As for VVD, the initial negotiation was a mess and we are lucky that nobody paid what Southampton wanted then, else we wouldn't have won the CL nor the EPL.

I think VvD was fairly unique, he had obviously had allot of conversations with Klopp selling the project and plans, hense our apology in the media !!!! but it appears VvD only wanted to join us. Man City apparently offered him more money and at the time, they were champions and winning trophies regularly under Pep, compared to us, I thought at the time it was strange how he was so focused on joining us, very happy he did and since he has won bigger trophies with us (PL, CL, European & Club World Champions) compared to City where he would have won more, but lesser trophies.

Lesser trophies, how is that, City won 3 trophies last season, and I think 2 in the season before that (the season we lost to Real Madrid), which includes 2 EPL Championship winner. With him in the team they might have won even more, unless you assume he wouldn't have made a big difference in their defence.

I think they will be contenders next season especially if they buy Sancho.

Media are getting carried away with United, a few wins and they are all over them, they still have flaky players like Pogba & Martial who play when it suits them, so they will be up and down like they have been for the last 2 season. Greenwood looks good.

As I said, he would have won more trophies with City, but we have won bigger trophies, City would happily swap their EPL wins for a CL win, to help them sportswash their/Abu Dhabi image. VvD would improve any teams defence, without him we may not have won CL & PL.

Nobody knows what would have happened if VVD went to City, maybe they would have done the quadruple, but we were lucky we paid the asking price, which City refused, they did the same thing with Maguire, in fact, their highest purchase under Pep is Rodri for 60m I think.
