They are not the saints you make them out to be.

To my knowledge Hitler murdered no one directly but his rule led to the death of millions in that sense he was like Mandela in the 60's. Hitler though never repented Mandela did.

Thats history there is good and bad you are either too arrogant or too stupid to understand I suspect the former although maybe not with Lumba he probably thinks Mandela was a boy scout in the 60's picking flowers and singing hymms

Now Mandela is responsible for what his wife who he divorced did. Mandela as I said before was a freedom fighter and killed people just like any soldier would do and as I said before, he is not the one who invented necklacing and haven't read anywhere that he ordered that, it is a violent tradition in Africa and still happens now. You are the one stupid enough to compare him to Hitler. You also got confused with Marx, Lenin, Stalin, better shut up if you dont know your history.

Most of the deaths the ANC murdered were black Africans the fact the ANC were violent and Mandela was head of them in the 60,s is a historical fact. Your interpretation of history is meaningless. Let's imagine in 1960 they had the technology today the burning to death of a victim on the streets would have been filmed on a mobile phone and shared on social media and been on the news feeds globally within the hour. Mandelas legacy would have been very different today. But that's history and how history is which is why applying modern day standards back in time does not work. The statue pulled down in Bristol by a mob was actually of a good man in his day. Back then slavery was legal and practiced almost entirely across the world but he gave money to the poor and help develop Bristol and rightly or wrongly he was a history of Bristol. And if we are to remove statues let it be by the local authority by Democratic means not by a mob

Yes it was legal, but was it moral? I have no sympathy for slave traders, whether legal or not but I know your stand

Trying to erase history is not going to change what happened in the past. Statues, literature, flags etc... etc... are symbolic historic documentation / learning material to show future generations of the atrocities of the past, so we don't make the same mistakes in the future. Burning / destroying these historic items because of somebody/s fake emotions is detrimental for the majority now and in the future. People's interpretations of folks and items from the past is being politicized for some eijit/s ego, trying to be significant for five minutes.

If we allow this to continue, it'll be cutting off our nose to spite our face...irrepairable damage.

We could replace these statues with a more appropriate celebration of these 'great' figureheads from history.

Agree, history should not be erased as we must all learn from it, however, there are no reasons to celebrate those who did immoral things even if it was legal. Yes, the slave trader helped the poor people in his city but didnt stand up against slavery which I think everybody agrees was a bad thing. Let us not forget that without the forward thinking of a lot of white people, slavery wouldn't
probably have been abolished, better to celebrate these people.

The problem is if you apply the present day standards to three or four centuries ago almost no one would have a statue. And what we do today will be not aligned with whatever the standards are in 400 years time. Air brushing history because a few zealots are offended is both stupid and dangerous. And if we are to remove anything let it be within the law not a drugged up mob

In Hungary they have taken all such statues and put them in a park. So people can visit and see them. So you don't lose the history. That would be one way to resolve it.

Well, I am not too sure about that unless somebody starts thinking Mandela is the same as Hitler. Maybe doing the same as they did in Hungary and putting those statues in a park with a bit of history written below might be a better way to go. I cannot see why any slave trader be celebrated, even if he gave money to the poor, for me it's tainted money. I would understand if you see it otherwise because the British Empire was built on slavery and colonial rule.
