The Great Economic Re-set and probaby compulsory vaccinations.

In the meantime highlight everyone's differences and set impossible end goals that can never be reached. This whole narrative is so dangerous, and wrong, and doesn't seem to be slowing down. I don't think these celebrities realise how much worse they're making the situation. I suppose it's what happens when a generation gets it's morality from footballers and Youtubers.

I think people are desperate for a grand narrative and the marxist theme of the 'struggle of the oppressed' has been adopted. There seems to be a virtue in being downtrodden so even young lads on £200k a week need to talk about the adversity they've faced. So brave.

Businesses and celebrities are now being targeted for NOT speaking out against their own deseased and racist societies. The same societies that have made all the freedoms to question it possible.

Sounds a little idealistic but we can educate people with knowledge and history, show children these statues and explain why their actions were so wrong. As we're now seeing with old tweets and worst still, TV shows and films being seen as 'outdated' (Gone with the Wind ffs..), social norms change all the times so who gets to decide what's accepted and how far back do we go? How can someone be comdemned for using a derogatory term that was accepted when they said it and why are people so confident that they've finally got things right now?

I know that's a little off key on the statues thing, but people can't learn from history if they tear it down.

As I said, as long as slave traders are not celebrated and explained why they were and what they did, then yes.

Every now and then we get events that should signal the catalyst for change. Protesters jump on it but as soon as it turns violent the politicians slap it down on behalf of the silent majority and it goes away for a while. Statues exist as a tribute to people who have done great things for the area they lived in or were born in a certain town and went on to do great things. Others have street names or buildings or football stands named after them.

The problem with the slave traders is that the one in Bristol was there because he was a philanthropist. However if such people only became so generous because their wealth was built on something we now all accept to be wrong then the statues should be torn down. Melted down even. I wouldn't put them in a museum.

I agree and I'm sure most would on individual cases like that, but it sets a dangerous precedent if actions like we've seen are considered justified. Who gets to choose and what criteria do we use, and how far back do we go? Better to reveal the truth, expose his whole past for what it was and destroy his legacy than hoping throwing a statue in the sea will facilitate change.
Do these mobs really care about what the statues represent or understand how they'd be dealt with elsewhere? Or are they just looking for a cause that involves smashing stuff up under the messed up guise of virtue.

As you say it's playing into government hands as well. Divides the nation and inevitably leads to stricter laws etc which ironically makes things worse and moves further away from the positive direction they've been heading for 100 years.

It gives governments here and in US a great opportunity to swerve their Covid19 failures although I suspect the diversion is more welcome in the US.

You cant apply modern standards retrospectively if so history would not exist. Few people from 300 years ago would survive examination by todays world nor will people of today stand scrutiny 300 years in the future. And if we are going to start ripping statues down let it be consistent starting with Nelson Mandela and Karl Marx the former murdered opponents by burning alive the latter killed hundreds of millions by starvation through the misery of the soviet era

Mandela had to resort to terrorism to fight racism in a country where the majority of the population was oppressed and Karl Marx was just a german economist, not sure when he starved millions. You better know a bit a history before taking such crap examples else you'll look very stupid.
