We 'signed' Kai Havertz for Liverpool next season - this is what happened

With Kai Havertz linked with a move to Liverpool in the next transfer window, Esports and Gaming writer Nathan Bliss takes a look at Havertz's possible impact if he did sign for the club.

With the coronavirus pandemic having a huge impact on the whole of football, there's huge uncertainty around when the next transfer window will take place, and when it actually opens, which clubs will have enough funds to actually buy any players.

Despite this, Liverpool are continually linked with a host of players from around Europe, with the likes of Timo Werner, Jadon Sancho and others all being mentioned as possible targets once the next transfer window opens.

Another player who has also been mentioned as a possible transfer target is Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Kai Havertz, who returns to Bundesliga action tonight on Monday May 18, as Leverkusen take on Werder Bremen.

So, what kind of impact would Havertz have at Liverpool if he did join?

And, which Liverpool midfielder could have to make way for the new signing?

We used Football Manager 2020 to have a bit of fun and see what could happen if Liverpool sign Havertz.

To set up this simulation, we booted up Football Manager 2020, then opened the editor and arranged for Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Kai Havertz to join Liverpool for £107 million on July 1st 2020. Obviously, transfers might not happen during this date in real-life, but this is the best way to get an accurate simulation of his performance for the club over an entire campaign.

We then simulated two entire seasons on the game, to see what kind of impact the attacking midfielder would have at Liverpool. This is what Havertz's profile looks like in Football Manager 2020 in July 2020, with all of his attributes shown in the screenshot below.



The German midfielder has supreme attributes in almost all areas, having had a year of extra development playing regularly in the 2019/20 season before his 'move' to Liverpool.

The young midfielder can play in a variety of positions, including as a number ten, number 8, or even in the forward positions, so he would be a hugely useful option for Jurgen Klopp in the 2020/21 season.

On to the 2020/21 season, with the signing of Havertz secured....

As well as Havertz arriving, Klopp also gave the green light to sign young French midfielder Yvon Prigent for the Under-18 squad.

The other signing was young Ukrainian winger Victor Tsygankov, who would add real competition to the Liverpool front three.

There was a bit of summer clearout too, with Divock Origi, Loris Karius, Adam Lallana and Adrian all sold on permanent deals.



So, what kind of impact could Havertz make to Liverpool's performance in the 2020/21 season?

Havertz was in the form of his life at Liverpool in 2020/21, directly contributing to an incredible 38 goals in 56 appearances, including 20 goals and 18 assists. For a midfielder, that is an astonishing return.



You would think that a midfielder contributing these kinds of numbers might mean the Reds front three output drops, but it was actually the opposite.

With Havertz in the team, Klopp employed a very fluid 4-2-3-1, with Havertz as an 8/10, operating higher up the pitch but not quite as a ten, with the front three of Mane, Firmino and Salah ahead of him.

Just look at the front four's numbers at the end of the 2020/21 season.



These four directly contributed 146 goals between them over the campaign, either scoring or assisting. Wowzers.

So, how did the team perform overall?

In the Champions League, Liverpool would reach the quarter-final stage in 2020/21, eventually losing to fellow English side Manchester City.

But, they had more luck in the cup competitions, with Liverpool winning the Carabao Cup.

For the second season in a row, Liverpool were Premier League champions, losing just one game in the entire campaign.



So, Football Manager 2020 predicts that not only will Liverpool win the Premier League this season, they'll also win it next season too, with the arrival of Kai Havertz making the Reds more dangerous going forward than ever before.
