Liverpool FC giving away free sanitary products to female fans at the match

Reds have joined Everton FC in the fight to end period poverty

Liverpool FC have joined the fight to end period poverty by offering free sanitary products at Anfield.

This means that at the Reds’ next home fixture against Fulham on Sunday, all ladies and accessible toilets throughout the stadium will be kitted out with either ‘free-vend’ machines or baskets of items for female fans to "take what they need".


Period poverty describes the inability to properly take care of menstrual needs due to lack of affordability, and it is estimated one in 10 girls and young women in the UK are unable to access adequate sanitary protection.

The Club released a statement earlier today following a successful trials at the Manchester City, Red Star Belgrade and Cardiff City fixtures.

Daniel Gallo, HR Director at Liverpool FC, said: “Period poverty is a very real issue and one that no-one should have to face, so we want to do our bit to help any supporters who may be struggling to access these essential products.

“Free sanitary items will now be available in all female toilets, in all stands at Anfield, at every home game going forward - and supporters can take whatever they need.

“Menstruation is also still quite a taboo subject, so we hope that talking about it and raising awareness of these issues will help to end period poverty for good.”

The new scheme sees the Reds join a number of other clubs in backing ‘On the Ball,’ a campaign founded by three students aiming to help end period poverty.

Mikaela McKinley from On the Ball said: “By supporting our campaign and supplying free period products, Liverpool are showing what a forward-thinking and inclusive club they are.

“The support we have received for our campaign, from both club and fans, has been absolutely fantastic - well done Liverpool FC!”

In October Everton FC also said they would be providing free sanitary products for female fans.

The Toffees are working with feminine hygiene company Lil-Lets to provide free sanitary products on matchdays.

For the rest of the Club's home games this season, fans will be able to pick up free Lil-Lets products from all accessible and ladies toilets at Goodison Park.

So an obvious question... how do they afford to get in the game?

All sanitary towels should be free anyway.

Women can't choose to have or not have a period so it's a great thing it's free.

What happens if you are attending the game on Sunday with a cold will the club be offering free Lem sip ?

I guess this is a raise awareness campaign, the fact we are talking about it proves it's working I guess.

Seems silly to give away at the game as anyone who can afford to attend the game should be able to afford sanitary products, if the club were serious they would give them away at the club shop, I hope they are not club coloured......

Or a stiff neck at Goodison...... oh, hang on, Rooney knows a granny who can sort you out with a massage.....

Besides the usual and predictable playground jokes which are allowed i think its a good idea to provide them free to women who may need them in an emergency whilst at the game.
Im not sure as said if they need to be free because of poverty when you can afford the ticket though.
Maybe we should encourage taking a very large bag to grab couple of boxes of them to offset the price of the entry ticket, considering the small amount of women.that go and only twice a week at most then it wont break the bank will it.

These items should be free anyway. Doesn't matter if you go the game or not.

You shouldn't have to pay for something like that.
