yes your quite right about VVD and Vertongen both adding something going forward and into midfield however your forgetting the are vulnerable at the defending side, Ferdinand was a rolls Royce of a player but Vidic bailed him out., Bruce bailed Pallister out and at times JT bailed Carvellio out.
The problem we have with VVD is he seems to buckle a bit when under pressure, Sterling bullied him into conceding a goal in the away European leg, Lukaku bullied him at Old Trafford and even Lamela unsettled him at Anfield where he was forced to give a penalty away. If you look at all the big clubs we have played since he arrived they have all scored against us and when you pay 75m you spend that to stop that happening. I think Lovren is our Steve Bruce, JT, or dare I say it Dave Watson type defender and Harry Maguire falls into that category...just the way I see it anyway, you make good points tho...
Just check what Salah did to Maguire
and when you have looked at that you look at what Sterling did to VVD in the second leg for City's first goal...it's a bad point you make talking about one off games, I can remember a certain Terry Gibson scoring a hatrick and tearing Hansen and Lawrenson a new ar*ehole back in the early eighties at Highfield Road were Coventry beat us 4-0 does that mean those two defenders weren't good enough too...your logic not mine...
But even after that, Hansen was a pretty good defender wasn't he? VVD conceding one or two goals doesn't mean he's not good enough. As a rule, he's dominant in the air, a good tackler, and a good interceptor, and a true leader and organizer. For every one mistake you can show me, I can show you twenty instances of him bossing it. He massively improved our defense since he stepped in, and even Manchester Untied fans admit that. Even with only a half season with us, we conceded fewer goals than last year.
We conceded fewer goals than Leicester. So what has Maguire done that VVD hasn't? Your assertion that he's a better defender is based on nothing more than your subjective feeling. Here are some facts VVD wins 72% of his arial duels and 64% of his total duels compared to Macguire's 66% and 61% respectively. He conceded fewer goals, and they both made exactly one defensive error in the league last season (not comparing Europe because Macguire didn't play there).
