Thats definately not always the case, usually just the original signing on bonus is the case if the club is pushing the player out.

Alonso/Arbeloa would have had their contracts paid up

If a player gets £2m signing on fee to be spread over 4 years and we decide to sell them after two, then they can quite rightly claim that they are owed the remaining £1m and it is that what gets paid

I'm not Rafa's biggest fan but what you said is incorrect

Actually mate, it's entirely correct and i can speak from experience on this one. The only exceptions on this are where a player puts in a written transfer request or where the contract is pre agreed, though the latter is particularly rare.

When a member of staff (player or manager) is forced to leave by the club, the club are in breach of contract. A recent example of this would be Benitez himself leaving, a compensation amount needed to be agreed on the remaining 4 years of his contract. However, had Benitez wanted to, he could have demanded the £16 million he was entitled to and sat on his backside for the next 4 years, picking up his salary every month.

This is only partly true. Wages and bonuses are due if the player is being let go even though he has time on his contract to run down. The full wages are never due if the player is being transferred to a different club.
E.g- Bellamy, Penant were not paid extra to leave the club, the buyin club sorts that out or else we can keep paying their wages and waste their careers.
Rafa took the money he did because he or for that matter any pro would like to bet on his talent to earn more elsewhere rather than rot for the duration of the contract.

Alonso and Garcia dragged us through the early rounds of the 2005 Champs league, neither were from Houllier's team
