Vish I don't think the British troops are ever anywhere because they want to be they go where they are told. If they are lucky they get sent to Cyprus otherwise it's probably not a barrel of laughs. It's also worth noting that unlike the Soviet Union Russia is quite poor Britains economy alone is several times bigger. I also don't agree all weapons spending would benefit America Britain France and Sweden all have quite big defence industries and are desperate for business. Assuming neither side wants a nuclear war any conflict would be conventional and were Europe to increase its defence expenditure that and our technology would see off Russia in a conventional war. It would certainly deter them from invading which is a risk at the moment to places like Estonia Latvia and even Poland 2% GDP of those countries won't be a big change, the US is already spending much more than that outside NATO. Britain's economy might be bigger than Russian, however, in terms of weapons and army they are way ahead. The Russian economy is completely dependant on oil prices which has been relatively low for the last few years, however, as you might have seen, sanctions haven't done much. Russia is not going to invade any country but will rather get a buddy to become President or invade a strategic location. So again, not much will be done. Britain spends about £15 billion per annum less than Russia on defence were we and say Germany / France add just 1% to our defence spending we would be well ahead of Russia on spending 1% GDP of a big economy is a lot of money. You say Russia won't invade any country it already has done recently Ukraine and Crimea. Latvia Estonia and Poland are at real risk which is why Britain has recently stationed 1000 troops there and a typhoon squadron Either you don't read properly or don't understand, I said Russia won't invade a country but rather strategic location. It didn't invade the whole of Ukraine but a strategic location, Crimea (to have some control of the Black Sea), which by the way was part of Russia before it was annexed to Ukraine in Soviet Union days, when both Russia and Ukraine were part of the Soviet Union. Invading Crimea was easy as the majority of the people there are Russians. It's not the same as invading a country like Poland. Maybe you didn't know but GB did something similar with one of our Islands, ie, annexing it to GB just before our independence which we are still trying to get back. The island, Diego Garcia is currently the biggest American military base in the Indian Ocean. All the inhabitants were expelled from there and relocated to Mauritius and Seychelles. Vish if you question British imperialism you automatically become a member of the IRA. Welcome on board.

Why are you all talking about war? This will turn into nothing but posturing and rhetoric before dying out. We will do what we can like expelling their diplomats (undeclared spy's) and maybe some financial penalties and rightly so for what they did.

I think only Stan wants to go to war and as you say, the best that can happen is financial measures like freezing of Russian assets in the West, UK should start there as Russia would have the biggest exposure in London. Not sure pro money Tory govt will do it though.

Hitler did exactly the same in World War Two in the early stages re the Rhineland and other places. Unlike Britain much of Europe is land taken and retaken over the centuries and disputes and grievances are many. There is a very fair chance Russia will invade or create unrest leading to a posed liberation (exactly as Hitler did in the late 30,s hence why NATO is building up forces in Poland Latvia Estonia etc.

I think Germany and France lmay have something to say about starting a war on mainland Europe. And with that childish comment once again displaying your bovine lack of intelligence. Firstly a 1000 well trained well equipped and backed by air power British troops is no pushover. Second they are not alone they are alongside American and other NATO countries including Germany. And third the whole principle of NATO is a holding force that brings the full might of NATO in event of attack. Attack one attack them all. Even if one British solider was there the outcome would be the same. That threat has kept the peace in Europe for 70 years at the height of the Cold War NATO troops could only hold back Russian forces for days before escalation quite probably nuclear. So my IRA friend that 1000 troops is no mean threat and the Russians will think long and hard before taking them on.

Any government is pro money vish. Yes, but sometimes you need to make choices and you need to have some principles like not helping Russians launder their money, right? Unless you just want to make a show of playing hard ball against the Russians but allowing them to launder their money in your banks.

As far as deployment goes what we are doing in those countries bordering Russia is the right thing a minimum force to act as deterance. No I don't want more troops there no I don't want to start a war. However I do believe Britain and Europe would be wise to increase defence spending even before the poisoning incident there have been many commentators mentioning our defences are at dangerously low levels. This year the tornado is being retired in time to be replaced by F35 but between the end of this year and whenever the F35 come into service Britain is vulnerable so if it were me I would keep the tornado squadrons going for a few more years. They are still a very capable jet. I hope that was clear for you in summary don't over react but this is a wake up call,
