The Everton defender Mason Holgate is facing the threat of a misconduct charge and a suspension after the FA opened an investigation into allegedly homophobic tweets that emerged in the aftermath of last Friday’s acrimonious FA Cup third-round defeat by Liverpool at Anfield.

The tweets, which contained offensive language such as “fag”, “faggotttttttttt” and “battyboy”, were posted in 2012 and 2013 and have been deleted, but they have been brought to the attention of the FA’s disciplinary department, which has launched an inquiry. The FA is also gathering evidence regarding Holgate’s allegation that he was racially abused by Firmino during the first half of Liverpool's 2 v 1 win.

I agree Stan...however it gives us an insight into Holgate the person. Whilst I'm not for one minute trying to suggest Holgate is homophobic so could invent racial slurs, it gives another side of Holgate we never knew before. He who claims of discrimination has discriminated against others in the past!

Safe mate. Mortals didn't have access to a global audience then.

He was a child when he wrote that. It's a mistake that can be addressed, but they shouldn't throw the book at him for that. I remember Suso getting in trouble with us for something he said on Instragram about Jose Enrique.

15 years old when he wrote it, you can't judge someone off one or two things he's said.

He was 15 then. when I was 15 I was making fun of gay people all the time, I've learnt from those experiences. Cant use that against him. But if the allegations of racism are false, he should be punished.

15 years old or not. If he is happy to make derisory comments about minorities then he shouldn't be too offended if he hears them about himself.

Holgate was the only person who heard the insults. Which is odd as the players and ref who were closer to firminio heard nothing.

He's lying

We have all said stupid things as teenagers growing up.

However I think he has deliberately played the race card in the Firmino incident because he was trying to avoid being sent off.
