7th July 2010 - Wealthy Saudi buys Liverpool FC for $400 million
Liverpool fans the world over are rejoicing today at the news that a wealthy Saudi bidder, worth $50billion, has taken ownership of Liverpool FC.
After weeks of civil unrest and goverment intervention, due to the 'LFC Independence Day' protests at branches of Barclays Bank and the Royal Bank of Scotland throughout the UK, the American owners, Tom Hicks and George Gillett, were forced to accept a realistic bid for the Merseyside club.
In addition to the $400million selling price, $100million has been pledged for new player purchases and $350million has been pledged for a new 90,000 stadium.
With speculation that most of the club's playing stars were seeking moves, thousands of fans of the famous club decided to take matters into their own hands and threaten to boycott the banks.
2010 will be noted for the vuvuzela, the South African vuvuzela and the Liverpool vuvuzela.
Such fan action has not been seen since the reaction to false claims in the popular tabloid 'The Sun' which resulted in an eternal boycott by fans, the sentiment of protest has returned.
Thousands of fans threatened, on the 4th of July 2010, a famous American holiday, to close accounts and default on loans with Barclays Bank and the Royal Bank of Scotland if both banks continued to support Hicks and Gillett, resulting in the Royal Bank of Scotland immediately recalling the existing tax payer loan and forcing the sale prior to the 4th of July 2010 Independence Day deadline.
The 'LFC Independence Day' protest gathered momentum after fans learnt of deals, in principle, which would see the club's five major stars move away and that the current owners had ruined all possible deals due to the excessive $800 million asking price.
Cash machines at branches of the Royal Bank of Scotland and Barlcays Bank were targeted with 'Hick's Out - YNWA' stickers, allegedly rendering cash machines un-useable due to stickers placed across the keypad.
Speculation is rife that blockages of the entrances of the banks by fans prompted government pressure and resulted in swift action by RBS in recalling the tax payer loan to Hicks and Gillett. No comment has be made at number 10.
The protest had overshaddowed the 2010 World Cup, now it seems that the only dispute remains is which Liverpool legend, Fernando or Steven lifts the World Cup on 11th July 2010.
