I really don't think Southampton weren't confident of getting the money they wanted, if they decided to sell. Every man and his dog knew that if VvD left Southampton, it would be for in the region of £70mil. The issue is, even at that price, they did not want to sell.

If, as you suggest, they would have done the deal at the sum they were holding out for, they could have expressed this to Liverpool, inviting an offer and the deal would have been done.

Yeah, your probably right, my thoughts were more to put a good offer on the table to tempt them and we walk away , it's like when Barca offered the £130 million package, allot of us were tempted by that.

I don't think he was a panic buy. Getting an England international from a top club who is only 24 is good business. Factor in he rejected a better deal from a more successful (recent) club and it looks good for us. He's done more than Barkley and they wanted the same amount.

However. He doesn't have a position on the pitch. He was out of contract at the end of the season. And we have 10 other players who can do what he does.

I don't think he will add anything more than what we already have. But maybe he just needs a bit of confidence.

I've never felt so little about a transfer.

How about Klopp bringing in a cb on loan then?

On the other hand we could do with 2 new capable cb's. Klavan isn't good enough for other purposes than the early rounds of the domestic cups and as an emergency solution when someone else picks up an injury. Sakho has also left, so we're into our bare bones when it comes to cb's. Only 3 left now, if we don't count Gomez.

What happens next time Matip gets injured or banned? Klavan and Lovren playing against Real Madrid doesn't really fill me with great confidence.

Mate, it is not easy to sign another decent CB on loan or a bargain.

Some people may ask for Howedes, but he is not that good tbh. (He is definitely better than Klavan but he is not even as good as Lovern if you see him plays in the bundesliga) And he is not the defender that can sort out our defence. We need someone tall and fast who can help out in set-pieces defence as well as adapt a high defensive line defending.


For the VVD saga, personally I beleived the one decided to leak the full story to the press is to be blamed. I beleive someone in the club thought that it is a good strategy to leak some information to the press and telling everyone that VVD will only join us so that we can get a bargain from Southamton. This is a poor strategy and we got caught by Southamton and had to pay the price.

It will be interesting to see what Klopp can do to step up the Ox's game. I don't rate his chances, but you never know. Anyway I don't expect to see him starting for the City game or in our upcoming CL encounter, as he's not better or as good as what we have already, also it'll take some time for him to get up to speed with our style of play and pressing style. We should have put that 35m towards a decent half back and it would have strengthened us a lot more than this unneeded addition.

Klopp must have seen something in the Ox to want him, one thing Klopp is very good at is spotting a player and developing them into the way he wants them to play in his system. He also gives an option if Mane or Salah are not available with his pace, I think he's a good squad player and is good quality to bring in if we lose a Mane or Salah, something we have not had in recent years, as we saw last January.

We had the £35 million available for/towards a CB whether we signed Ox or not, the problem is Klopp could only find a CB in VvD that we could not sign as he was not available, we had the £70+ million ready if Southampton released him, so we did not need to save any money for a CB, we also sold Sakho for £27 million, so that money would have covered the money spent on Ox.

I thought we already had Coutinho and Laĺlana who could play as wingers as well as Salah and Mane. Maybe we won't need too much input from defenders given the number of goals we will be scoring
