Because he is a Southampton player and Southampton don't want him to leave. One of the refreshing things about the last transfer window was clubs putting their foot down and expecting players to honour their contacts and commitments. Not kiss the badge on signing then be looking for a move next season for better options. You never know if trend continues we might even see the start of basic loyality again.

It shouldn't have been a complicated transfer.

He wanted to come to us. We wanted him. We were willing to pay a record amount for a defender. And an English record between clubs.

We messed up by convincing him and agreeing terms before we even told Southampton.

They stopped the transfer because we were being stupid. That's why I'm not happy about it.

I respect Southampton's decision not to sell. I suspect they would have sold if it hadn't been for our attempt to deprive them of a bidding war for the player, I could be wrong there, but it's interesting that they only objected when they seen the leaks that the player only wanted to come to us and had already turned down City and Chelsea. Anyway as you say Shaggy, we can't blame Southampton for playing hardball when we did the same ourselves. Personally I think it's time the rules of the game were respected and enforced, and clubs like Southampton, ourselves and Leipzig did the right thing by taking a stand, it's long overdue.

Ridiculous that no effort was made, not one legitimate bid lodged for VVD. I don't care whose fault that was but to allow 2 months of a transfer window to go by without seeking an alternative to VVD is unacceptable! To top it all off they sold a much better CB than Lovren & Klavan.
