Rafael Benitez has donated £96,000 to a support group set up for victims of the Hillsborough disaster exactly a week after he was relieved of his role as Liverpool manager.

During his six years at Anfield, the Spaniard continued to underline the importance of remembering the 96 Reds supporters who were crushed to death on the Leppings Lane terrace at Sheffield Wednesday's ground during the FA Cup semi-final in April 1989.

Two months ago, on the 21st anniversary of the tragedy, he said: "Since I've been here it's always been very, very emotional.

"All the players and all the staff are always there trying to support the families because it is a very important day for the club.

"The first time I went to the Memorial Service I was so impressed by what happens at this club. You can see the people and all the feelings.

"It's a poignant occasion to keep everyone remembering."

This afternoon Benitez, 50, presented a cheque for £96,000 to Margaret Aspinall, chairwoman of the Hillsborough Family Support Group (HFSG) at the group's headquarters as he prepares to be unveiled as Inter Milan's new head coach next Tuesday.

Mrs Aspinall said: "It was just nice to know that he wanted to see us before he went."
