I'd go back to 1984 in a heartbeat when you'd get the odd game on the TV and you'd wet yourself watching your heroes on the box or when the old man come home with tickets to Anfield the drama of not having your red crown paints kit clean for the kick about at lunch time in school or losing to Utd in the FA cup felt like the end of the world just like it did when Rushie went to Juve but then only to have you faith restored with his twin brother banging them and you thought Rushie who?! Those trips to our second home Wembley!.
I'd love my son to experience a title winning season thats all he's missing because we've won the European cup and he's been to an FA cup final so far in his action packed 10 years on the planet.

i agree they were good times from the point of view that A: we were small B: the game was at its peak.
bu if the standard today went back to that of the eighties i couldnt watch it now. so maybe it would be fun to go back for a while, but i wouldnt bring it forward to today. in my Delorian.

Yes, the footballers were of all shapes and sizes back then but when you look at the skill level at the very top, is it much higher now? The athletiscism of players has increased across the board but I remember McDermott, Kennedy et al and some of the passing of that era would grace any pitch today. Getting fit is relatively straightforward. Having a talent and nurturing it to a high standard is subtly different and I wonder if part of the problem, in the modern game, is the triumph of lung capacity over skill. We have the best league but we can't even begin to stock the best teams with home grown talent. Techniacllty we're no further forward and Liverpool were the technical giants of Europe in the 80s even when they were a completelty British outfit. At the grass roots level, away from the silly money, some real work can be done and there is certainly lots of ground to cover.

good points from you both and i agree with you murph that no fotballer is worth the kind of money they get in salaries and what they cost in transfers. it's really a sick world for primadonnas.
but then i agree with you flames that the standard of the game has improved by miles. footballers today can do things with the ball that no one could 20-30 years ago.
when it comes to the new owners i will say what i've said in other threads. we need to bring in a owner who can clear of the debt, build the stadium and give us the opportunity to sign our main targets for once...we don't have the luxury to choose this one or that one, we won't find a genuine lfc supporter who have the funds to take the club forward. we just have to get the yanks out of the club asap.

You are right Swede but thats not the point being made here. I welcome new owners whether from the Middle East or the moon.
But I am not sure todays footballers are better skill wise as someone above said fitness yes skill not so sure. Also because it was less exposed then it meant more emotionally.
Flames I would not like to be transported back either but nor do I think the current format is the way to go. I think football will find a level eventually the fans cannot afford these levels ultimately. So we might get best of the old world and new one day. One point in terms of skill how many kids play park football these days? The so called skill of today’s football is an illusion high fitness followed by a few tricks that’s not skill in my book.

Oh god, lets go back to the old days, what polio, scurvy and rickets ( sounds like a vaudaville act ). All the talk of - ticket prices will keep the fans away - the club belongs to the fans - fan power Load of b--llocks. Surely one thing we, Man U,Man C and Newcastle should have learned over the last 3 yrs is that we have little or no influence. Clubs do not derive income from the fans who come through the gate but from TV, merchandising and market dealing.Check the club balance sheet and look where the money comes from. Having said all that I am glad I am over here and able to dodge the [oops] that is sure to come my way

i can't believe anyone really thinks players are more skilful nowadays, if anything it is the opposite ...... modern day players couldn't cope on the mud pitches of the past

Mike J yes you are correct.
But is it a good thing is the point. Given you live in Thailand the TV screen is your exposure to the game. But where do you think the crowds / flags / atmosphere an essential part of the game. Where do they come from do you think when you view your plasma on the wall...its the fans Mike.
Something taken for granted.

if gate reciepts dont matter, then why is it so financially critical for lfc to build a bigger stadium.
