So much discussion about VvD but Southampton forum has a long thread on Virgil van dijk , 63+ pages long , I just picked out some quotes but I highly recommend any with any interest in VvD have a look to gain some perspective on how it's viewed in the other end .
They use stones for £49 million as a reason why VvD is worth more , they don't want to be a selling club , they don't like our attitude toward persueing VvD have a proper look and gain some perspective this thread won't do the forum justice

ALL BELOW ARE QUOTES I PICKED BUT THEIR ARE MANY MORE.

Liverpool Echo now talking about px with Sakho If Liverpool expect to fund this by attempting to knock £30mill off the asking with Sakho I think they are in for a big surprise

We are reported to be interested in Ake from Chelsea and Sakho from Liverpool but I would hope at realistic prices. Taking players in part exchange rarely works out and usually mean a deflated transfer fee for an overvalued make weight. I think a cash deal is the best deal then we buy whoever we want at a competitive price.

In my opinion VVD is potentially the best centre back in Europe and would be better going to either Real Madrid or Barcelona rather than the second rate English clubs. That's really where we should be targeting getting them into any auction or waiting until they are.

Yeah I think this is the key problem. And even though £60m is a awful lot of money, how many players in our usual bracket does that buy you? 3?

You need to hit on two of those three to make it a notable success, and even then one of those isn't going to be as good as van Dijk.

I still think he'll go, but I think it will be unlikely to Liverpool now.

Barca or Real Madrid for a huge fee would be my preference if he has to go, just to wind up all those Chelsea/man City/Liverpool fans.

Liverpool fans are a deluded bunch of ***** aren't they, first time they've been a champions league club for what 4/5 years? and they only made if by the skin of their teeth and they are back acting like billy big club again, as if how dare Southampton stand up to them and of course van Dijk would chose them.

Hope this definitely means we don't sell to Liverpool now or ever again. I'd quite happily see us make their rivals richer just to screw them over just see to see their fans whine about it.

Be interesting to see how quickly (or at all) Liverpool come out and deny this.

Any long delay for a statement would be pretty damning.

Would love a transfer ban, would be highly unlikely but hilariously funny.

Jeez, reading their forums...
It's like the tiny-minded ****wits think buying a few players off of us obliges us to sell them whoever they want and they can go about it however they like.
The thought that we might be keeping him seems to be completely alien to them.

tell me about it, apparently they 'develop our players', yeh they developed Lovren all right, developed him into a clown and Lallana/Clyne are no better than when they played for us IMO, probably a bit worse.

The sense of entitlement over there is staggering, they just seem to think they should be able to whistle and we'll just fold. they aren't bloody Real Madrid, they are haven't done anything for like 10 years, haven't won a title in nearly 30 years, just snuck back in the Champions League Liverpool, if any actually good big club came in for one of their players they would be gone in a flash.

If it wasn't for Mane, they'd have finished like about 5 points better of than us, they were a decidedly ordinary team when he wasn't playing.

One of the their ITKs is claiming it's a done deal apparently.

Yeh jog on.

And they are totally playing the victims here, the amount of 'what us' and then trying to claim Man City and Chelsea should be reported as well is completely pathetic.

They are a sad club, with sad supporters stuck in their glory years which are older than most of them. At least we know our place, if you based Liverpool's status on what most of their fans think they would be Real Madrid, Barcelona and Harlem Globetrotters rolled into one.

To be fair it's true they never walk alone, mainly because they're always walking with a massive f*cking chip on their shoulders and a sense of self entitlement and self importance that's second only to tory politicians

Now in all this, it is the arrogance that is most distasteful. Maybe Liverpool think, given their past dealings buying our players, that they can do what they want, when they want. It might well transpire that VVD will end up at Liverpool. But it is the arrogance that makes them such an unattractive club. And maybe the worst thing about it is that they don't even recognise their arrogance.

....so Sakho, who isn't good enough for Liverpool is obviously good enough for us, even if it is a downgrade. And we should just accept it as it helps them out!!! They don't realise the absurdity/arrogance of that argument.

let's be honest, if they got a transfer ban I bet the majority of premiership fans would love it, just because of their delusional ignorant fans.

That article is disgusting as well, basically we should just bend over and let them do what they want because they are 'mighty' Liverpool who haven't really done anything of note for years, let's also remember this is 'mighty' Liverpool that finished what 7th the year before last and are only in the Champions league this year because they had no Europe.

Van Dijk is better than that Liverpool team , he should be going to a team is actually going to win things, not some slightly above average team that without Mane would have barely scraped the top 10.

"Liverpool will not be held to ransom over the signing of Mohamed Salah from Roma"......Poor Reds...

Yep, now we have nursed our top quality CB (who has been out for months) back to fitness we should sell him and take their not so good, currently out with a serious knee injury, CB in part exchange. And this despite Liverpool demanding a huge fee for said CB when we wanted to loan him in January as cover for VvD!

Perhaps if they had helped us out in January we may have decided that Sakho was a good VvD replacement (and perhaps he wouldn't have got injured) and that very deal could well be on the cards. However, ............. feck 'em!! I hope they receive the same punishment in regard to signing first team players as they have recently received for tapping up the Stoke kid.

Don't know how many remember Klopp coming onto the pitch at St Mary's to hug and chat to Mane after our league game in 2016. Can't stand the slimey creep.

Yep, I remember that. Klopp had a massive smile on his face which was weird considering his side had just lost despite being 2-0 up and cruising at half time.

If he's met Klopp in person whilst we've been paying him to be injured then there is no option but to back Saints, whatever people think of Reed etc. That's worse than Lallana did IF true and VVD would be best advised to have a minor niggle before he plays Saints, particularly at SMS because the abuse would be even worse that Lallana and Lovren. The abuse got to Lovren in particular so badly Klopp had to sub him at HT in the 3-2 defeat. Whether the PL will take appropriate action and ban Liverpool from the transfer market for 2 years if these allegations are proven is another story.

Would take £5m or £10m less and sell him to City or Chelsea or he stays. Let's see how VVD and his agent like that!

I hope that Saints can wrestle back some semblance of control over this situation. Liverpool practised the "dark arts" of transfer deals in order to prevent an expensive bidding war, and got caught mainly through their own stupid triumphant leaks. For me it would be unconscionable for Saints to sell to them. It would not be the end of the world if he went to Arsenal, United, Chelsea or City for an amount approaching Saints valuation, especially as, player power being what it is, he throws a nuclear-level hissy fit. Just not Liverpool and they should tell VVD's agent as much if VVD really is unhappy at the idea of staying here.

I think that it is good to take a principled stand against a side that has repeatedly turned the heads of our players since returning to the Premier League. Of course contact happens all the time but this level of personal persuasion involving the team's manager has crossed a line, which explains why the club are being described as "incandescent" in the media.

Is it just me that thinks our issue with Liverpool is less that they've talked with the player but more that they've seemingly blabbed to the press about it? Putting it out there that he wants to join Pool looks like an obvious way to deter other bidders plus the stated fee of around £50mil in these articles is significantly less than what we are apparently saying he's worth (£70mil?) and looks to me like Pool trying to set the fee without negotiating. I'm sure we're open to offers for him but it doesn't look like a fee has been agreed with the club and Liverpool are trying to force it down which understandably would annoy us!

_____

Their forum is funny. Plenty of goons saying he's not even that good which is strange he because those of us who have watched him closely know he's probably too good for them.

He'll still leave, but this has really made me chuckle.

Oh dear, no doubt they will blame the media and play the innocent victims card again. Still it's great that the club finally grew a set and pushed back rather than bending over for that lot again. He may still go but at least it won't be to them!!

Klopp will be going nuts. Oh to be a fly on the wall in their next transfer meeting.

All very embarrassing for Liverpool. Looks amateurish quite frankly.

Lets just take a minute...and laugh at the bin dippers.....
He may still go there...but it shows what a bunch of self righteous bunch of ****s they are.

Having perused a few forums for other Premier League clubs (well City and United), I can confirm that Liverpool are a laughing stock.

All L-Pool fans at work that has been laughing and saying we did it again and you know this feeder club bull - all of a sudden it's not so fun any more - probably wear my Saints shirt to work tomorrow just to show who's got the last laught : )

Absolutely ****ing brilliant. Now sell him to City to rub it in a bit more.

Les possibly confronted Virgil and got his evidence. Very difficult to cover up flight histories, passenger names because of security, a trail that would be very easy to follow.
I suspect the apology is an attempt at damage control after the panic reaction of being caught whilst having already been banned for tapping kids for the academy. I doubt Saints asked for an apology as they are looking to make a point. Lambert admitted regular contact with Gerrard before he Lallana and Lovren left leaving a nasty taste. Then Clyne and Mane. I know we got good money but it was the way it was done at the time. VVD has over five years left on his contract and Bertrand over four years giving the club the decision.

Liverpool may well now get charged. It's time they got their comeuppance. A few more need a lesson. The Sky money to everybody is a game changer.

Tbh I couldn't care less about rival fans, they all have chips on their shoulders regarding our club, so most talk a lot of rot.

I read only the first paragraph and stopped as neither Barca not Real Madrid are after him. Completely inflated by Southampton fans.

I get your point , especially based on them slagging us, but based on VvD Im not sure that perception holds much relevance based on how VvD is viewed , and considering LFC must negotiate with Southampton to buy VvD , I'd say southampton opinion becomes relavent no?

@reds for champions

Why do you continue to judge VvD on such dross?
Omg I'm actually done with this, if you honestly stand by that judgment so be it , but just to let you know I seriously am perplexed with your process of judging players, actually based on how you judge players, "if" Barcelona or Madrid were after him it don't make things easier ! He'd be worth £100 million because of bidding war, so I actually rather Barcelona don't come sniffing about, I'd rather we get him for £75 million and put up with peoples perplexing opinions based on the price tag.

What was your opinion on mané signing initially ? Overpriced?

Van Dijk signed for Southampton for £11.5m.
Sakho signed for us for £20m.

Van Dijk got injured in January against Leicester in gameweek 22...Southampton were on 27 points in 11th place and finished 8th on 46 points.

Sakho went on loan to Palace and made his first start in gameweek 26 in the 1 nil Middlesboro win...Palace were 19th on 19 points and finished 14th on 41 points.

If you judge who had the better impact for the time spent on the pitch last season then it's identical with 7 wins for both teams, although you'd have to say Sakho had the better impact because Palace were 2nd from bottom!

So we want £10m more from what we bought Sakho and Southampton want £58.5m more for what they bought Van Dijk less than 2 years ago?

Seems to me that the Southampton fans are the deluded ones!

Well, this is my whole point, Barca and Real are not after him because he is not good enough for that kind of money. Regarding Mane, I didn't think he was overpriced at 34m, this is why IMO we shouldn't go more than 50m for VVD though I think it would be overprice but acceptable in today's market. The right price would be 35-40m.

That is interesting , IMO sakho is a great player , unfortunate circumstances with LFC, I love Klopp but I think he took it too far with sakho and he deserves another go, ye I'd take VvD though but the market is inflated no doubt, it really isn't good for football, it seems as the prices go higher the amount of talented players decrease, messi & C. Ronaldo haven't been rivalled for 6 years ( the exception is Suarez but FIFA made sure he wasn't nominated )

Football talent in general seems to be on the decline?

A world were ferguson doesn't rate pogba, let's him go for free , and is now the most expensive midfielder of all time,

You also got to factor in Allardyce went in CP also and brought Sakho in, I hate his football, but he knows how to organise a team and get the best out of them, so that turnaround is not just Sakho, but I remember watching a few CP games and he was a beast, like against Arsenal.

If Klopp could sort out their differences, I'd be happy to keep him, especially if we aren't offered £25+million.

Lucas was our CB cover, so if he's being sold, we must be bringing someone in.
