The only thing that should matter is that he wasn't in the final 23 man squad which he wasn't. That says that they didn't want him for the tournament so should be able to return to playing for his club.
If the Cameroon FA are just being spiteful about this because he didn't want to play (as he hasn't for over 18 months now) then FIFA need to step in and take action against them.

Law unto themselves. Do as we say, not as we do. tw@ts.

Seems crazy you cannot retire/not appear for your country if you choose to, International games are played all over the world, what if you don't want to leave your family for 2 months to attend your country, some players must have commitments like sick relatives/kids etc ,so they cannot travel far away easily, or what about if their scared of flying, like Bergkamp was ????

Well, if you can convince your country manager, you can get away with it. This has been done to curb the power of the clubs and players, otherwise the AFCON will hardly have any players in Jan. The problem is that the tournament is in Jan

But regardless of all this, Matip wasn't in the 23 man squad so why is he not allowed to play?

You know it is not about wages else nobody or only 2nd tier players would go to the AFCON as most major leagues are playing then and no team will let their players/employees go. Matip was in the initial 30 players list but said he would not come, ie he doesn't want to be selected. This is why his country FA is playing hard ball. If he had accepted, he would have been in the 23 unless the reason was injury.

Maybe they should change the date so doesn't conflict with the big leagues might get more attention too ! June/July is rainy season in central Africa so a lot of countries cannot organise the tournament, this is why they do it in Jan which is a problem for those players playing in Europe. Clubs are well aware of this so cannot really complain

Same here Vish and we play cricket.
That job interview was going so well until I realized I was fukked up on acid in the middle of a cornfield naked and talking to a scarecrow.

Does anyone know the consequences of ignoring FIFA and playing Matip? I'm thinking if it's just a fine we should do it.

Same here Vish and we play cricket. It's not the same kind of rain, more like the floods you get now or monsoon in India.
