The problem with Neville is his black and white/'I am always right and everyone else is wrong' attitude. There's very little humility and consideration for other persons involved in the situation. His treatment of David Luis a few years ago was poor. His reaction to Karius's interview was unprofessional and over the the top. Jamie Carragher is similar in the way he goes about his job.

Sky employ him Neville for their own reasons. Whether he's the right person for the job from an ethical perspective would not be part of their calculations. I don't think that either of them are a good choice. I would prefer professional presenters who can maintain balance and decorum. Or at least have rotating presenters so that a wider persepective is provided - instead of one dimensional individuals who may have their own agenda.

thats a very good post, enjoyed ure view and thought it was pretty balanced, I agree that Sky probably do deliberately employ certain pundits a sense they like controversy which in turn provides headlines which means more publicity. I just think Gary Neville most of the time says the same things we would say in the pub half an hour after the match instead of manufactured pundits like Hoddle, Garth Crooks and Michael Owen types...

Problem is.... he's not balanced. He's too close to one club and therefore there's a huge question mark about impartiality. It's not blatant and it doesn't come into play most of the time, but in certain situations it is an issue. The Karius and David Luis examples are exactly that type of situation. Would he have been so brazen in his approach when Fergie had been trialling a keeper, or if David Luiz had been playing for Mourinho at Old Trafford? I don't think so. Any journalist adopting similar tones against one of their players would have been banned from OT.

He's simply not a professional, impartial journalist. He's got too much association and too recent an association with a club that already weilds it's power in the game. Even his employers had shares in the cub I believe.

I much prefer the other pundits you mentioned. Hoddle, Owen ... they say it as they see it but in a civil, balanced manner. It might come across as boring but it's down the middle. They don't come with the suspicion of having hidden agendas.

I think it was decent. Don't think they so much gave Gary Neville an easy ride, but I do understand that given his recent headline making, it made sense to give him a platform to voice his opinions civilly in the studio, opposed to the drivel being posted on faceless social media. He gets a rough ride for being involved with England and Valencia... but he was involved and should be able to take some criticism. I agree that it is his biggest flaw as a pundit, his stubbornness to accept opinion.

I completely disagree, however, that his bias to United makes him a less interesting/presonable/professional pundit. It is highly unlikely in any situation that Neville's opinions on the show would have any external effect on anyone he comments on. It does indirectly cause pressure through those convinced by his words, but you could argue Karius' comments, Klopp's comments, or your average journalist would do the same. Journalists have vested interests in maintaining relationships for information, so what... it is part of life and would be far less interesting if the opinionated were removed from tv for more balanced pundits.

I don't agree that he gets a rough ride for being involved with England. On the contrary, I think he gets an easy ride. He has been involved but no one really knows the extent to which he influenced things. There have been murmurrings about how he had too much sway over Hodgson but i haven't seen anywhere where he's been grilled about it and held to account. He walks straight back into a media job and starts giving opinion about how the FA mishandled the recent Rooney episode.

Hi bias doesn't make him less interesting... but certainly less professional I would say. Opinionated speakers do attract interest and have a place, but I suggest they should be on alongside someone with equally strong but different slant and with an independent journalist running the show. Hence the Neville, Carra thing works because it creates checks and balances. It's just that it would be good to see a greater variety of presenters.

He talks a good game, but it takes allot more to get the best out of a team/players, as he found in Valencia.

The chat was a strange session, Neville is a stalwart at Sky, so I think the reporters were holding back abit, as they all want to keep appearing on Sky programs, Oliver Holt seemed the only one to really argue it out with Neville.

They could have really tore into him more about his work with England and when he tried to get the player on strike for his best mate 'Ferdinand' when he was banned, but they seemed hesitant to me and no one wanted to rock the boat too much.

maybe they did hold back a bit, really enjoyed it though found it quite entertaining, Martin Samuel was a bit quiet probably coz he's a United man...

I would have loved to have seen Roy Keane invited to the chat, he's so bitter, would have been fun and Gary Neville would have been allot quieter !!!
