it's down to the strikers brilliance ofc, but the goalkeeper has shown vision and power for it to get to the striker. come on chris, last season the most assists was 18 fabresgas with cazorla behind on 11, this season most assists ozil 19 with eriksen behind on 13, they can't be that easy to get. it's about getting in the position to make the assist most of the time as well, so I don't think anyone can do it Yeah those players you mention create goals with incisive passing, defence splitting passes, not a 5 yard sideways pass. Coutinho has it in his locker but as others have mentioned he's very inconsistent.

I'd take £50m for him. That's an awful lot of money for anyone let alone someone who can be wildly inconsistent.
Someone else said in another thre4ad a few weeks back that there's no one in our squad that they'd be disappointed if we sold and I feel the same, even Cout. agreed.however we get mugged by others in return whichh is a shame

Yep it's like when we sold Torres, we mugged Chelsea for £50 million for an injured player who would never be as good, but then we paid £35 million for Andy Carrol, so about £20 million over the odds. I still cannot understand how we got to that figure for a player who was out injured at the time with hardly any proven experience????
We should have just sat on the money till the summer, especially as we had just got Suarez for £22 million, but I think FSG wanted to make a statement as they had only took over a few months before and selling our top striker and not spending big would not have looked good, especially with the history of our previous yank owners Hicks & Gillet.
I would rather we kept Coutinho, he is inconsistent, but over time that will improve, he can do something out of the blue and open a game up, we do not have many players capable of that, so as long as we can get someone to replace him (Gotze maybe), at £50 million it's good business, I just worry we will not replace him with like for like or better.

It won't be easy replacing him with someone world class, and even if we do, has anyone thought about the wage increment for his replacement?

Crediting people with assists with simple short passes which result in long range goals is too easy. Alonso and Gerrard used to get proper assists with perfect through balls to Torres. A little sideways pass doesn't mean anything to me, anyone can do it! Having the foresight to anticipate what your teammate is going to do, the technical ability to be able to pull it off and the timing to get the whole move (from before you receive the ball until after it's left your boot) down, in potentially tight areas surrounded by opposition players? They're not all that involved by I'd say any intentional action is a valid assist.

Interesting we're talking about assists, I wonder if klopp will sign javier pastore, he wouldn't be my first choice (I don't have a first choice but there is again, good options) as he's not the perfect box to box midfielder or the defensive midfield force we're looking for. but he's a creative central midfielder, I wonder if klopp could put his career on track, also rumoured interest from Juve

I think our greatest accomplishment in this coming transfer window will be to keep hold of players. We may as well forget the fanciful thinking of purchasing such luxuries as Gotze, Pastore etc... because we missed that boat when the final whistle rang in Basel. I think Matip wouldn't have come if he had the foresight to have seen we'd end up with no european competition for next season.

Why don't we just keep what we've got with the exception of those whose contracts are about to expire? Surely our greatest asset this coming season is continuity without the hindrance of Europe. We lost tons of points immediately after European games last season...we also lost key players through injury and fatigue from playing in the Europa League. Man City, Man Utd & Chelsea all have to get used to new regimes, something we can take advantage of. Bar maybe a new LB and a CB for cover with the outgoing Toure & Skrtel and PLEASE! PLEASE! GOD anything as a GK Coach that isn't Achterberg... I don't see much reason for sweeping change!
