Some player comparisons from OPTA:
Coutinho VS Eriksen
8 Goals 6 231.5 Minutes Per Goal 444.7 27 Total Shots on target 38 35 Total Shots off target 31 43.5% Shooting Accuracy (%) 55.1% 6 Successful crosses 13 14 Unsuccessful Crosses 47 30% Successful Crosses (%) 21.7% 5 Assists 12 45 Chances Created 108
At the moment Coutinho's strength is obviously his shooting - which in fact is rather poor, statistically spoken. Just 2 more goals than Eriksen.
But look at the Chances Created stat! There you have Eriksen's strenth! And where is Coutinho?
Either Coutinho was just working wonders when SAS were firing on all cylinders, or he is simply trying to do too much on his own now. He doesn't seem to have developed a partnership that is working with anyone in the squad. Dribbles the ball and shoots.
He's been a one trick pony this whole season!

it's slightly strange that coutinho's crossing success is better yet eriksen is a better passer than him. I think most of the answer is in your post, when you say he doesn't seem to have developed a partnership that is working with anyone in the squad. eriksen has alli, lamela, and kane, coutinho has firmino, lallana, and whoever has been upfront this season. tottenham also have a more industrious central midfield. and a more reliable attack that has worked for them, 65 goals scored to our 59 in the league so far.

Coutinho needs players to run ahead of him. He is constantly having the Suarez syndrome trying to lift the team by himself. If we have a few more intelligent runners ahead of him he is definitely more effective. Right now he only has Daniel who knows when to make the the runs.
He is getting better every year and just fizzled out a little this season. With kloop's methods fully onboard we should see more players running ahead and better tactical pressing. Actually coutinho is the player I worry the least about.

Hi all -it's my first time on here but I just had to say something. Is it just me or does Firmino give the ball away a lot? He just seems to be so careless at times and makes me feel so frustrated. I know he has his good moments and can score nice goals but should he have started the second half? Agree with you, he has had a few moments but overall crap for the money we paid, even Lallana has been better. Maybe he needs a season under his belt, though I am not too hopeful

I'm not denying eriksen is a great player who has grown in the tottenham side over a number of seasons, but if he is more creative than coutinho it's strange that eriksen only made 2 assists last season in 38 appearance full PL campaign. He also scored 10 that season, and yet this season way more assists than goals: 6 goals, 15 assists so it's reversed. okay he must have improved a lot, but it's a stark contrast that he is way more creative this season than last.

Maybe he needs a season under his belt, though I am not too hopeful no end of matches this season I've seen firmino press and chase, and yet not be able to get a foot in. finding it difficult to be effective. we've not really had proper wingers, so it's been difficult for firmino to be able to get the space to shoot too, his average of 1.9 shots per game exaggerates how little shooting opportunities firmino has had this season, and shots in good areas, as he has played 11 of his 23 full starts in PL matches as furthest forward attacker/striker so that will have raised that average unrepresentatively. As I've said before liverpool aren't ready to press the way klopp wants as we don't have enough quality, but as soon as liverpool are firmino should theoretically be much more effective from central attacking mid. make more interceptions/tackles, lose the ball less, have shots in better areas/more space, and make more key passes. it's funny really though deli alli is actually averaging much worse for some of the things firmino is being criticized for, for example bad touch/control per game, alli 2.5, firmino 1.8.

Specific stats on their own doesn't mean much and that stats for Alli says it all. If you try to get involved and touch the ball lot you are more key to have more bad touches, very simple to explain and if other aspects like goals and assist are more, bad touches become secondary.

true. but firmino tries to touch the ball on almost every occasion he can, he can work as hard as deli alli I'm not hearing otherwise. firmino's best performance was against man utd at home, liverpool pressed well - man utd helped them do that, liverpool scored from the press via a carrick mistake, which we haven't done enough of this season, hardly at all for saying we use a 4231- going back to what I'm saying liverpool don't have enough quality to press the way klopp would want.
bad touch is the best way to lose the ball.

It really helps if you have a striker who can hit the back of the net. The number of assists that Ozil has this season is incredible when you look at how they have come about. Half of them are a sideways ball before someone like Sanchez takes two touches and buries it. Similar with Eriksen getting the ball to Kane. It still counts as an assist if last pass is a simple one. With Coutinho he has to be goal supplier goal scorer and match winner all rolled into one. Yet again a couple of iffy games and we have the doubters sticking the knife in on our top players because they don't do the job every single week.

The thread is about Firmino. Typical of many brasilian players.
