Grujic and Matip moved for Klopp, and Gotze seems interested too - is this why FSG brought the German to Liverpool all along?
Anfield will look a little different at the start of next season, but Liverpool will be hoping it becomes familiar with an old friend.
Jurgen Klopp will embark on his first full season in charge with a number of new players in his line-up - and will do so in front of an expanded Main Stand. With it, the truss that sits upon it, a symbol of the club’s growing ambition to remain competitive with the European elite.
Of course, what happens in front of that new stand will dictate their standing on the continent, too. Champions League football, that old sparring partner, would be the perfect accompaniment to a brighter, busier Anfield.
It is unlikely, though not impossible, to finish in the top four. A likelier scenario – which, perhaps, speaks volumes of their chances of the requisite league finish – is to win the Europa League.
The hope and expectation is that Liverpool do their utmost to do so. Champions League football is not just about the prestige, about parading in front of the world on a Tuesday and Wednesday night; it is also about recruitment.
Generally, Champions League football attracts the top players. Look at Romelu Lukaku’s comments this week, where he intimated his desire to leave Everton without it; it is a rule, though not a castiron one, that the top competition attracts the top players.
A few anomalies exist, such as the anomalous Luis Suarez, who joined the Reds when they weren’t in the Champions League and departed when they were. The goal, however, is clear: dine at Europe’s top table.
Yet it is unlikely Liverpool will do that next season. Bookmakers make the Reds 7/1 to win the Europa League and 12/1 to finish in the top four.
All may not be lost, though.
Consider Joel Matip, a full international and one of the Bundesliga’s best defenders this season. Out of contract at the end of the season, he could have remained at Schalke – a Champions League mainstay – or move to a club guaranteed to be in the competition next year.
He chose Liverpool, and Klopp.
On agreeing a deal with Matip, the Reds boss said: “Schalke is a big club who have played the last four or five years in the Champions League. They made him a big offer to stay, they wanted to keep him.
“There are probably only three or four clubs in Germany who could get Matip when he is at Schalke – Dortmund, and that’s not possible, Bayern, maybe Leverkusen and maybe Wolfsburg. Finish. The rest, no chance.
“I knew he was thinking about doing something else because he had been with Schalke since the youth team in 2000, a long time, and he wanted to do something completely different.
“This was our chance but there were a lot of clubs interested in him.”
Marko Grujic, Klopp’s first signing at Liverpool, also veered towards Merseyside when the German became personally involved in the deal.
Inter Milan, Chelsea, Zenit St Petersburg and CSKA Moscow all wanted the Serbian midfielder, but it was a telephone call that sealed his fate.
“He called me one month [ago] on my phone and spoke to me very well,” Grujic said. “I was thinking about my progress in my next period and decided it was good for me to come here and try to be the best I can...

Well I've both Praised and criticised the great Klopp'o, but in this regard I've no argument with the view that he, his personality, reputation and his international standing in the game will be a help in attracting, if not the very top international players certainly those very good and still youngish players who want playing time and a chance to develop their game to the very top level. That would be a considerable improvement on what we've been recruiting (and overpaying for) in recent years. According to Dunk, Klopp's attempt to sign Ter Stegen wasn't approved in the last window because of cost factors, and it now looks like City may sign him. Could this refusal to pay the going rate, in both fee and wage, be Klopp's biggest difficulty in securing his preferred targets?

To be fair, Barca did want stupid money for him and he's only their back up. I'm glad we didn't pay what they wanted. If you believe reports, Klopp didn't want to pursue Texeira any further because of Shaktar's demands so it's not all about what FSG will pay.
One things for sure though, it'll be a very interesting summer to see who we can bring in.

Well wilkij, as usual you have a point, but if he turns out to be a world class keeper, as he's showing signs of, it could be a very poor decision. What's the point in signing a top manager if you're going to handcuff him by turning down his top targets for a relatively small difference in fee valuation, or as is more likely wage expectations? Given the money swirling around the PL at the moment it smacks of a stubborn adherence to a discredited recruitment and moneyball policy, however much it has become attenuated. Anyway as you say it will be an interesting and informative summer transfer window.

I've been saying this for ages.
Big name players want to play with big name players and for big name managers.
Alexis Sanchez rejected Us because he had never heard of Rodgers. You only have to look at the targets. Under Rodgers we were getting Allen and borini.
We are now linked with gotze and players like him.

I'm sure his buy out is higher and that what we would had to have paid? Hopefully for the right player we'll stump up and not just pay over the odds for the average players we have of late.

That job interview was going so well until I realized I was fukked up on acid in the middle of a cornfield naked and talking to a scarecrow.
