Liverpool midfielder also admits he needs to find more consistency in his game.

Emre Can believes little attention should be paid to the Premier League table – because Liverpool have improved under Jurgen Klopp.

But the Reds midfielder admits their current ninth-place position is down to their inconsistency – his own included.

Can has hit his stride at Anfield since his compatriot took charge at Anfield in October, becoming a crucial part of the midfield.

Despite that, Liverpool are currently seven points off a top four spot – albeit with a game in hand – and six points behind sixth-placed West Ham United.

Yet Can believes their current position is no reflection on the improvement achieved under the new manager.

“We still have to play one, two matches more than the teams ahead of us, we can still gain a few spots,” Can told Kicker. “So we have achieved something under Jurgen Klopp.

“You should not look at the standings, [Klopp is] one of the best managers in the world.

“You should look at the football we have played in recent weeks. We’ve made a huge step forward as a team and have put in good performances most of the time.”

Liverpool’s last fixture saw them relinquish a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2 at Southampton, dealing their Champions League qualification hopes a huge blow.

Can, who played the full game in Germany’s 3-2 defeat to England on Saturday, maintains Liverpool’s focus remains on sealing a place in Europe next season.

But he concedes that will only come with consistency from both himself and the team.

“A place in an international competition clearly has to remain our goal,” he added. “Our problem is that we are just not consistent enough.

“We follow up two good matches with one bad match too often. We need to manage to be consistent for a longer period of time. This also applies to me [but] it automatically comes with age and experience.”

The 22-year-old will return to Germany next week with his club side to take on Borussia Dortmund in the Europa League - a game the former Bayer Leverkusen man makes Dortmund slight favourites in.

“Dortmund are the slight favourites,” he said. “We have come so far in Europa League, we now want to win the competition.”

Couldn't have put it better myself, that second sentence in this article. But I don't feel the need to justify that because I think I already have tried in previous threads.
