Klopp has found consistency and balance with three 'failed' signings in the middle.

One of Liverpool's biggest criticisms, for over 18 months now, was their lack of spine.

For some, that was a literal statement. After the fearless 2013-14 season, the Reds regressed into their shells. There was little fight, grit or determination.

For others, the lamentation of its spine related to one of football's biggest necessities – strength down the middle of the pitch; defence, midfield, attack.

It is the latter Liverpool have missed more than anything.

Successful teams have strong spines. In 2005, Sami Hyypia, Jamie Carragher, Xabi Alonso and Steven Gerrard were reliable components; in the 2009 title-challenging team, Carragher, Alonso and Gerrard were joined by Javier Mascherano and Fernando Torres.

Even in 2014, the likes of Martin Skrtel, Daniel Agger, Gerrard, Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge formed a strong centre.

With so much change and upheaval in the past two years, it's no surprise Liverpool have been lacking consistency down the centre. After all, Gerrard's move to Los Angeles was not just the departure of a captain and talisman, but a player who has been central to the team since the turn of the century.

When Liverpool's lack of spine is discussed, the summer of 2014 is a common complaint; then was the summer of their discontent. The money received from Luis Suarez was not reinvested on securing, and safeguarding, the spine of the team.

At least, that is how it was under Brendan Rodgers...

He's coming next summer

Not for me, I think he's finding his feet in the defensive role and really starting to shine. Has to work on his passing a bit more, as it's quite wayward and sloppy at times but he's really turning into a leader in that role. Now just needs a playmaker next to him, preferably not a deep lying playmaker but someone that links the play all the way up the field and has the ability to run through the midfield with Emre sitting in behind to give an option if the play breaks down or break up a counter.
