Jordon Ibe was sent off in injury time for England U21s - in a game which represented a pretty good summation of his season so far.

It marked the end of an evening when he threatened to help Gareth Southgate’s team secure an important three points against Switzerland in Thun but failed to make a decisive impact.

Ibe had only been brought into the action in the 27th minute, replacing the injured Chelsea man John Swift.

Playing on the left wing, the Reds man was a regular outlet for England and looked capable of making an impact alongside Leicester’s impressive Demarai Gray and Chuba Akpom, who put the young Lions in the lead in the 47th minute.

But final balls went astray and promising positions were lost as England couldn’t quite put the Swiss away.

Ibe got his first yellow on 56 minutes after pulling a shirt during a breakaway after the ball was lost. Another breakaway saw the Swiss level in the 75th minute through Florian Kamberi.

Late on the 20-year-old cut in dangerously off his wing and fired just over as England sought a winner but his efforts to stop a quick free-kick in injury time saw German referee Daniel Siebert give him a second yellow and eventually produce the red after consulting his notebook.

Southgate had no complaints with the decision after the game and it’s a result which keeps his team three points ahead of both the Swiss and Norway with three games left in qualification...

Ibe is a very young player with true potential, what sense would it make for a club who's recruitment policy is predicated upon recruiting (and often massively overpaying for) potential to sell him on so prematurely? Wouldn't it be better to keep him foe another season or two, and instead add some much needed top quality to the obvious positions?

yes keep him if his career improves , but not if he keeps failing which sadly he has been recently .
