Makelele, Viera, Keane, Mascherano, Hamman were all DMs who fouled a lot. Lucas' job is to break up attacks thus protecting the back 4, he will therefore foul quite a bit. It is a thankless and dirty job but it is vital. I wish people would be a little more tactical in thought to see this. It's not only the fouls and the unnecessary ones. By the way tactical genius, would you put Lucas as good as the players you've listed above?

Most DM's give fouls away though vish. It's just part of what they do and not many true DM's score much either. I agree with the rest though. Yes I agree but Lucas gives away a lot of unnecessary ones and is sloppy Are they unnecessary though? I'd rather he (or any DM) give away a foul than let players just run through them. Yes a free kick can be dangerous but is a lot easier to defend (in theory) as you can get the defence organised.

But we have conceded from unnecessary free kick and then there are the yellow cards, he was very lucky to have stayed on the pitch on Saturday. If he contributed to the other things like offering a bit going forward, making top passes and scoring a bit, then fine, but overall it is not good enough IMO, we need better.

I hear what you're saying vish but I just think whoever we get that does the things you say like the telling passes, scoring etc. that they'll still be giving away the free kicks as it's just par for the position.

Yes, what I am saying is that this is where we need improvement more than anywhere else, provided our strikers, not counting Origi there, stay out of injuries.

Been missing it since Masch.

No he is not and that is why I used those names because even the best gave away a lot of free kicks.

Lucas is probably the most underrated player and has been for a while. Before his knee injury he was excellent now a little later he is still bloody good. I saw a stat somewhere that he is currently the DM with most tackles and is most consistent in the league. Well done Lucas - haters will always hate! Do the dirty work and hopefully keep making the defence look good.
