Probably because we have offered a longer contract.
Have not seen it mentioned anywhere but it is probably 3 years with us.
City were probably offering two years and it was possibly a max of £165k based on appearances and bonuses.
I don't know this of course but it is the way of the world of football these days.
Of course City needed home grown numbers so that = £165k
We have offered or supposedly offered £150k a week because of Gerrard Johnson and possibly Sterling leaving. Quota again.
Although we still have Sturridge, Henderson, Ibe, Milner, Allen, Lambert (or Ings) Flanagan, Wisdom, Lallana.
Given we have all those did we need to bring in another at such a high wage?

Paying that amount of money in wages for a average player is fvcking silly...
Why do average English players at LFC get paid silly money over more talented foreign players....
Why not just pay the going rate for talented players....regardless if they r English or foreign....
Brodge had the following choice... Milner on 120 plus Or Kono on 100k....
And the rest is history...
Brodge will wonder why he got the sack this year....
City were offering £165k a week for this average English player. Could say we got a bargain and begs the question. If he's worth that much to the second best team in the country, why do you think he's not worth £150k a week to us? Could you say we got a bargain? I very much don't think you can at all.

Will he the highest paid player at Liverpool if 150 000 figure in the media is to be believed? What does that say about LFC, the transfer policy, the committee, BR and is this an attempt to get into the CL? Never thought that there was a wage or transfer fee cap as some think. However, there is definitely an overall budget within which the manager needs to work as in any team. The mistake made last seasom was that too many palyers were bought, it would have been better to go with only half of that number but pay for higher fees and wage. The number of players should be decided by the manager if it is not already the case.

Wilks when figures go round about how lfc cheapscated or that were interested in a player it's just media S ite or do you believe everything you read but if it's reported city offer 165 k for Milner it's like it's fact ? Just sayin not having a go mate but maybe use your policy on our rumours etc on that one ?. If I had said last summer we going to pay Milner 150 k and we're all going to be jumping for joy what would you have said I can guess Milner is ok like toure was ok but it's not going to get us to where we want to be with out some significant others coming in We now have two work horses hendo and Milner that's good but where's the gerrard type we have had for ten odd years ? Just quoting some figures that are out there to counter G. I'm sure figures will be in those regions but the exact we won't know.

IF City were offering the £165k a week that was reported and we got him at the reported £150k a week, that's a good chunk less and could, in that respect, be a bargain can in not? But I know you know best and he's just mediocre and you'll enjoy telling us all about it this time next year if it don't work out. I suppose that's just footballing knowledge for you?

No need to get defensive mate, you're entitled to your view as am I. Also don't get upset that I called last season (both the players we signed and how it played out) exactly how it happened. I was completely wrong about the season before! City who have far more money and have a bigger wage structure willing to pay just 15k more for a player we are essentially breaking our wage structure for (not quite as free transfers always get bigger wages and signing fees) does not in any way represent a bargain in my opinion. Not saying that that's a fact, just my opinion, but I don't see any logic in trying to call it a bargain just because city who pay everyone more, were going to pay him more. And I'd say Milner is better than mediocre, he's a good cog in the machine. The kind of player who is good enough to be a cog in a top 4 side as long as you have better players around him. He's an improvement on Allen so if we sell Allen and play Milner that's an upgrade. But he's still not a player that will bridge the gap between 5th and 6th let alone 4th and 6th so it's nothing I'm getting excited about. I think we will do decently for us, my fear is FSG and Rodgers see this as some sort of coup and that we have made a statement. We haven't, we got one of the better free transfers floating about, but someone who won't make a significant difference to our first 11. But we will see how the rest of the summer and the season play out.

Didn't mean to have a go BRK but I just get annoyed when people write players off before they've even worn the shirt, not that many have and I've been surprised at the love for Milner in here.
I know £150k a week isn't a bargain as such. I was just trying to counter G for basically rubbishing us for over paying for him because he's average and English. That average English player was still wanted by the second best team in the country and if we wanted him we'd have to pay for him.
I know it's only one player and he was 'free' but I hope this is a sign that we might start buying these men that Rodgers was on about instead of the kids we seem to get.

i know quite a few city fans and pretty much all of them speak highly of milner and his work rate. was never too keen on seeing him start for england but i'm willing to give him the chance. hopefully it will prove to be a good bit of business. the dressing room is missing some older more experience heads, not saying he's up to the task of filling gerrard's boots but at least its a start

Fair enough Wilks I can understand that. Personally I don't have anything against people using their experience of him, similar players, gut feeling, etc to form a view about a new or potential acquisition, even if it is a view that someone won't be much cop. But I can certainly understand not wanting to write someone off such early door, and where milner is concerned I definitely don't think he should be written off. You're right, City saw value in him, hopefully that value translate to our team without the super stars around him.
