A penny for your thoughts. What do you think will happen to Man City or Chelsea if the owners suddenly decide that a football club is no more an amusing toy to them and call it quits? Would such clubs be able to sustain themselves as the powerhouses they are today or would they return to their previous state of mediocrity?

I thought City were set up in such a way that they would be sustainable, a similar model to Spurs but not sure how it all works. Not sure about Chelsea but I'm sure they'd survive.

City are set up for life no matter who takes over, they have built multimillion dollar infrastructure that will last them a century. Liverpool football club is the club you should be worrying about who are playing in a rusty stadium with a shet pitch, thats the club you should be worrying about.

As others have said city will be fine and I think now if the sheik left it would not really make a great deal of difference which is why it was so important liverpool built similar facilities now sadly not to be. Chelsea maybe not I would expect a slow but progressive decline maybe back to a top six club.

Where in my post do I say I'm worried? You are making your own conclusions. This is just a general question about clubs owned by endlessly rich individuals and how they would cope if they lose them suddenly.

Well if any of them left it wouldn't be on the cheap so who ever took over would be in a similar financial situ so won't make a brass razoos difference now they would be selling 8 hundred mil or a billion not around the 300 we went for Nice saying that!! You're right though. Hadn't really thought of it that way but it's hardly like any of them would be sold for peanuts.

It's not just about the selling price. More important is how much prospective buyers are ready to invest in the club.

I think City will have a bigger problem as without the dodgy commercial deals through the influence of their owners they would be making massive losses while Chelsea is profitable already.

There would certainly be an impact if either Chelsea or City's owners just effed off.
FFP was brought in for a number of reasons; one of which was to ensure that a club wouldn't fold if it's owner died/got bored/went to prison etc. All clubs must be self-sufficient without relying on large cash investments. That said, clubs are allowed a certain amount of investment still (approx £30m per year?). So a new owner would have to be able to chip in if they wanted to sustain their current spending. And they would certainly have to be wealthy enough to cough up for any fines due to the breaching of FFP regulations. What that means is, City wouldn't be able to deliberately break the rules to win the league again unless their new owner was happy to put his hand in his pocket to the tune of £50m. The new owner would also need very wealthy connections to replace some of the arab deals when they expire.
Whilst the departure of the arabs or abramovich wouldn't be a disaster, their successors will almost certainly be a downgrade financially which will see them suffer a little. Especially on Chelsea's part as they don't seem to be as well connected as City.
