I disagree. 7, 8, and 9 have a lot of history behind them for our club. Some truly great players have worn them. Will that necessarily make whoever takes on that number better? No, but it's a symbol. It's a reminder of who we are and the legacy those player should be upholding.
Saying that those numbers mean nothing, when Suarez, Dalglish, Kevin Keegan, Gerrard, Fowler, and Rush and the like wore those numbers is silly. That's like saying that the fact that we wear red means nothing, that the Liverbird means nothing, or that the Hillsborough flames and the number 96 mean nothing. They're symbols that our club has attached meaning to. They're reminders of our history. They mean something.
