I hope thats not true because if these are Brendans unfettered choice then we have a problem. A big one.

Stan, they are absolutely not his unfettered choices. Both himself and Gerrard have stated as much in interviews done in the past year. However, it begs the question- if a manager has a list of players that are shortlisted by a 'team' and himself and doesn't really like any of them what does he do? Not buy at all? - considering his own position and the delicate nature of keeping onto a job at this level with what was a skin and bones squad anyway and having to go back to the drawing board would take a brave man indeed.

Further, if you haven't done so already I would suggest watching 'Moneyball' with Brad Pitt. It paints a broad brush of the approach used in baseball and the role of a general manager and gave me some insight into the philosophy which is prevalent to some degree at our club.

I also watched Moneyball but with that structure we needed to have a director of football which we don't, so I don't think it's the same and it is BR who in my mind has the final call.

Well, if you feel that BR is accepting all sorts of things just to keep his job, then he is definitely not the right man to take us forward as it shows a lack of character and it would be a total mess created by those administering us. I however heard him say a number of times that he is the one having the final call on who he brings or not except the Dempsey story.

Moneyball, Sabermetrics, Common Sense...or whatever you want to call it is all well and good but how can any manager be judged on players that he hasn't signed? I have 2 main concerns:

1) Surely, if a manager is sacked because his team is no good then he could counter sue by blaming those that picked the players for him to use?
2) Why would a player sign for a club when he has no idea if the manager intends to play him or not?

On the surface of it, I don't like the idea at all but none of us really have any idea as to how it works in reality.

English teams were doing just fine before 'directors of football' were introduced.

no but he had an age to come up with alternatives to suarez, he spent that time spending near 50m on lalanna and markovic - who have been fringe and useless thus far.

The tell for me on Mario was the last minute U-turn on Remy. There is definitely a muddled mess in transfer dealings and targets going on whatever or whoever and in what percentage different people are having a say. That does not come from BR jotting down names and Ayer going out and buying them absolutely no way.

Absolute shambles.

As I believe his no way on mario comments were a statement to that effect plus mario absolutely does not fit Rogers system !
However fits in very well with FSG's
Young cheap and talented ! I think that says it all ! if you were br and lost suarez and got mario who doesn't fit your plan one bit would you be happy ?

If I am unhappy in my job, I would look somewhere else, won't you? Even Pulis showed some character there and after finishing second and renewing his contract, Rodgers had all the cards in his hands. Saying that it is not his making is pure speculation as Rodgers said a number of times that he has the final say on transfers and he likes the recruitment process at LFC.

If BR was totally not involved in the signings then he should walk as they are undermining his reign right now. he could take the high ground and still have a very rep.
