Thought can was in that role too I don't think you will bring an unknown 20 years old player if he was your priority.

For me the big difference between City and Us is Fernando. The guy does all the donkey work in front of the back four. Interceptions, breaking up attacks and picking up the midfield runners.
It leaves the back four to stay in line and concentrate on picking up the forwards runs.
It also gives the attacking midfielders reign to push forward without the fear of getting caught up the field.
That's what we need and I think it will only be rectified once Gerrard retires, as the Boss will fear a fans backlash if he replaces Gerrard in the team. If BR has a better option than SG he should use it whatever fans say but I don't think we have or if we was even interested to bring a top DM. We have a problem in midfield and SG, Allen and Hendo is not a great line up, this is where City and Chelsea and probably Arsenal is better than us. i don't think its fair to say that and write them all off. considering it was a "masterstroke" to move gerrard into that role last year and henderson and allen both had good campaigns. lets remember they both played a part in our title fight last year. gerrard has just come off the back of an ever present season and a world cup... at his age thats some going. plus he always takes a while to get going. i think at cm arsenal had a hell of a lot of problems last year, mainly down to injuries but when you take ramsey out of the equation i don't think they're that strong.

Arsenal have 4 very decent players in that CM position Ramsey being by far the best together with Wilshere, Arteta and Flamini. We have a good SG but getting less good, Allen and Hendo are Arteta level with Flamini a true defensive midfield. We do have Can, but haven't seen him enough to conclude. But yes if you take Ramsey out they are less strong, but they have Ramsey who is changing games for them, I would have Ramsey or Wilshere anytime or even Flamini for a year.

We've needed a quality defensive midfielder for a while and its clear for all to see. Chelsea have Matic, John Obi, Ramirez, City have Fernando, Fernandinho, even Toure can play the role. These are career DM's as opposed to Gerrard who's first of all older, and is only adopting to the trade, then Lucas and Allen. Clearly we cant match Chelsea and City in that area.
The problem tho is that it seems the manager is either not bothered about DM, or has his hands tied as evidenced by the signings so far. I think his challenge is that if he bought one then that would almost certainly mean the end of Gerrard (Not many managers have the "nuts" to drop a player of his stature, perhaps only Dalglish or Fergie could). I hope am wrong, but until Gerrard decides to move on, we will still face a challenge bringing in a proper Defensive midfielder. If you think about it almost every other area has been strengthened bar DM.

I don't think that BR hands are tied on this, we have spent more than a 100m so if he wanted he could have brought in a proven player in that position instead of a 20 yrs old youngster with potential. It not even about SG as we need cover anyway as he is not going to play all games and Lucas and Allen are not top class.
