it's the blind spot in Rodgers, he is a great manager when it comes to offense but the way our whole team defends the box is undisciplined, the pressing up the filed is brilliant but when it comes to our first 3rd the players lose the plot..
- players cant keep track of the runners, losing the advantageous position often
- bad space rotation, often we have 4 defenders in a line with only 1 opposing team attacker leaving space open in other areas of the box, we can't seem to do ether the marking system or the zone system properly.
- how often do we apply the offside trap? the most vital tactic for a team playing up the field.
- closing the lanes, in defense teams need to heard the offense away from danger areas forcing speculative passes. very often we allow dangerous passes or penetrations. for a good example on how to apply this tactic look at Costa Rica at the world cup they closed space perfectly.
for an idea how team defensive management is important just look at Chelsea, when it comes to stats the players don't score big but the team is still the best in defense, that's because space is effectively locked out and the attacking team resorts to making speculative passes easily cut off.

Yeah good post EastMan, I've been speculating on that as Rodgers Achilles heel myself for some time also. Last season's performances by our defense bears testimony. We also seem to be unable to provide sufficient cover for defenders at midfield also, and many of our defensive problems have their origin there imo.
This season will be the acid test and if we leak as many soft goals as last season, we'll be fortunate to nail down a CL place, given the absence of our chief goal scorer,and the apparent lack of a replacement...thus far.

It is BR's weakness for sure. Though everybody is supposed to track back and defend, very few of our players can and our fullbacks are too upfront to have the energy to track back and defend. Also we do not even play with a true DM, so our players are mainly attack minded leaving too much space in our half.

I didn't stay up to watch it, Migs can pull off some good stops, but isn't a top quality keeper imo. Doesn't control his area, not sound on when to come out and when to stay, indecisive on crosses, and not great at distribution, these are critical attributes in a keeper and he's weak in all of them imo. Personally I consider Pepe a superior keeper and I hope he' s back to his best, we'll need him this season I feel.

Even more important for us now Suarez has gone Yeah it's a cliche I know but as the saying goes all great teams are built on a solid defense, the Barca experiment notwithstanding. You could ask is it the players fault or has it to do with discipline and organisation as suggested in the op? In my own opinion there are a couple of weakfish players e.g. Johnson at right back is prone to lapse of concentration and positional acumen, Skyrtel is error prone under pressure, Lucas gives away far too many free kicks in dangerous areas, and Migs is a weak link in goal. However you could well argue that much of that is the result of defenders being put under too much pressure by poor defensive organisation and discipline, and that would be Rodgers fault. Overall I think it's a combination of both, there are weak links, and poor organisation, which make it easy for opposing teams to exploit. Either way it ultimately comes back to Rodgers, it's his job to sort it out.

Yes are defence was not great last season but the best defence didn't win the league or any trophies last season. At the start of the season we had quite a few clean sheets but the attacking play took over. Its not like we got beat 3 or 4 nil's it was mostly by the odd goal.

What exactly did Mignolet do wrong yesterday?
Both goals were the fault of the fullbacks, even Gerrard should have cut out one of the crosses.
As for Robinson, he was no worse than Enrique, both of them got absolutely rinsed by Jesus Navas.
