It's great that we're being smart with our signings, and I understand that it's still early days in the window, but I have to admit that I feel somewhat underwhelmed so far. I look at the plastic flag brigade posibly bringing in Cesc and Costa, and sure, they might not set to world alight, but at least peoples ears [oops] up and take notice when you mention them, mo so than what we're being linked with.

I guess my question is, are the players we're bringing in really going to inspire others to want to join us? When good players see Cesc and Costa joining Chelsea, surely that will inspire them to want to join a team like that, where as Lambert and Can might not. I want us to bring in players that we couldn't get before.

Liverpool have never bought superstars, why start now. In fact we have generally sold our big name players. Keegan, sourness, rush, Owen, all went to big clubs with big fees(Owen excepted) and we were able to replace with hungry semi min own players.
Our current crop of players were also semi unknowns and if you look at the last 10yrs than you see how it is better to buy just a step down from the silly money players. Alonso,Torres, Agger, mascherano, Suarez, sturridge, coutinho hav all grown at anfield.

Take into account hat BRs biggest skil is improving players then it makes even more sense to spend wisely. Chelsea, City, Madrid, PSG are graveyards for many a big name player on silly wages and extortionate fee.

Fool and his money are easily parted, we are just starting to not be taken as a fool.

What I hope to see is us taking more points in games like:

Swansea - Liverpool 2 - 2
Liverpool - Southampton 0 - 1
Newcastle - Liverpool 2 - 2
Arsenal - Liverpool 2 - 0
Everton - Liverpool 3 - 3
Hull - Liverpool 3 - 1
Man City - Liverpool 2 - 1
Chelsea - Liverpool 2 - 1
Liverpool - Aston Villa 2 - 2
West Brom - Liverpool 1 - 1
Liverpool - Chelsea 0 - 2
Crystal Palace - Liverpool 3 - 3

From those games two stand out for me and those are Everton and Palace.

Scoring 3 goals without winning is truly awful. We need to stop that kind of results!

Conceding just 1 goal less in both those games would have given us two more 3 - 2 wins, 4 more points and the title!

Also from the games we won last year a few stand out where we shouldn't have conceded like we did:

Stoke - Liverpool 3 - 5
Liverpool - Swansea 4 - 3
Cardiff - Liverpool 3 - 6

Are those tennis results or what? laugh

I think the worst was Newcastle getting a draw with 10 men and not getting a draw at home against a pathetic Chelsea.

Lot of sense in what you say there cp, if only it were true of our current owners. However they aren’t buying just one step below the superstar, silly money brigade, they are buying several steps down in most cases. Last season we made a big deal of buying in the category you suggest but it turned out to be a puff of smoke. We’ll have to see what happens this window, and I’ll be much happier if we do buy a few players in the quality bracket you suggest, what I don’t want is another ass load of cheapie longterm prospects.

There's a balance you have to keep with it. Arsenal have given in over the last couple of windows. Wenger himself also. There's no doubt fsg are huge admirers of arsenal and the way they run the club. Anyone who tell you different needs to do their research of when they first bought liverpool.

My opinion is liverpool is liverpool we did buy the best players at one point when we were the best and attracted the big names. Barnes dalglish etc etc. we bought the best. We should be aiming higher, even if it's not the highest at the moment.

I may be wrong when I say this and I hope I'm proven wrong but I think fsg would run the club on a tight rope and settle for top 4 every year like arsenal and not invest in bigger quality to push on and challenge in Europe and also in the league. Every window is massive and I went into this one exited for the first time in ages but and it's a big but...I am worried suarez will leave and also I am worried that they won't invest correctly if he does.

I must dispute what cp1972 is saying kenny dalglish was a record signing and I remember shankly breaking the bank a few times Alun Evans for one.

And as for modern times too many to mention Suarez Torres etc

Remy? Sorry he's a poor mans anyone if you like.

We are talking a revamp if suarez leaves and learn from the mistakes Tottenham made while we do it. For me I'd try and scupper costa signing. At least we'd compete and maybe bump up the price. Although I would love barley I can't see him coming.

Liverpool never bought superstars? I think you don't know what you are talking about. When Barnes and Beardsley arrived, they were record signings and then there was Collymore among the few I can remember. Afterall, that was then, football has evolved since, in those days players were having beers after games, should they do the same?
