Such a good question and so tough to answer. The Gerrard of 5 years ago would be my answer. Of today's players I cannot think of many that could actually play in the system we use now and improve us immediately. The players we have are improving all the time. Also the penny has dropped given the replies so far. We were only looking for players that will improve the starting XI and between us we can't name many.
It would be so easy to name a defender due to the amount of goals conceded but in a season where goals scored will probably settle one of the key places I take goal power over defending any day. And in that department the only thing that could improve us is a goalscorer from off the bench. So for me it will be Lukaku.

I think that if we bought a player like Sebatian Rode, Granit Xhaka , Morgan Schneiderlin or if Spurs fail to qualify, I'd go for a bid for Paulinho, see if we can get him of spurs. Any of these mids will be helpful and improve our team. But they will only be so good without a good DM behind them.
So in an ideal world, I'd like us to go for Paulinho and Bender, that would do is wonders. I think you can consider Toure out of the question.

And who Lukaku would replace in our first team, Suarez or Sturridge, we play with 2 centre forwards? This is why I don't think Lukaku would improve our first team.

This is not a transfer thread of who we should buy but which one player who would improve us the most even if we won't be able to buy. I think there are a lot of better players that what you have mentioned above. I read that Yaya is your choice then as he is an option in this thread, yes?

Ok, then I think Paulinho and Bender would be up there with the best option and while we're at it Pjanic or Firmino would improve us a lot too and challenge Coutinho.
But if we only get to choose one, I'd choose Bender, without a doubt.

Tempted to say toure, though at 30, his impact would only be for a couple years. Other than that someone like song, bender, or fabregas would be a great addition to the 1st team
