This story has been posted by This is Anfield on Twitter! I have no idea if this is true or not!

@thisisanfield: Liverpool are set to buy Australian football club Melbourne Victory, according to a report. Head scratcher?

If we buy another football club before we buy any players it could make my head explode.

Following in the footsteps of Manchester City who recently bought 80% of Melbourne Heart, Liverpool is set to strike up a similar deal with their city rivals Melbourne Victory.
Talks were held at the weekend between Victory Chairman Anthony Di Pietro and Liverpool officials and it is very likely that the deal will be confirmed in the near future. It is also rumoured that Di Pietro was at the Hawthorns to see Liverpool draw 1-1 with West Brom.
The relationship between the two clubs was strengthened last July when they took part in a friendly in Melbourne, which saw over 95,000 Liverpool fans give an unforgettable rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone at the notorious Melbourne Cricket Ground. Liverpool went on to win the game 2-0 courtesy of goals from Steven Gerrard and Iago Aspas.
Last month, Melbourne Heart received $12 million Australian Dollars for the sale of their 80% stake to Manchester City, however Victory will be seeking in excess of $20 million from Liverpool, due to the fact that they are the largest football franchise in Australia.
The future of Australian football is continuing to look more and more promising and with the prospect of both Manchester City and Liverpool providing these Melbourne rivals with a wealth of experience and expertise it may not be long before it can challenge Aussie Rules and Rugby League in the popularity stakes amongst the Australian locals.

LFC as a company might find value in buying a football club as an interesting investment, though I am not convinced, but, as a football club that would make no sense IMO. If the target club was in countries like Holland, Portugal, Serbia where you can get good young players then probably it could have been worthwhile for LFC to use that as a supply club, but in Australia, quite weird for a club having limited budget. Maybe as a marketing tool. And why it would be a LFC buying instead of FSG?

I guess FSG wouldn't have to spend any of their own money and it would increase the assets of LFC

Short term it wouldn't change LFC's balance sheet net asset values at all.

Less money in the bank, replaced by Melbourne Victory shares of the same value.

Depends on whether Victory makes profit or not, doesn't it?

Melbourne Victory are one of the wealthiest clubs in Australia. Well supported and financially sound, but I cannot see this supposed takeover happening. I believe that someone has seen the Citeh purchase of Melbourne Heart and have been made aware of talks between LFC and Victory and have put 2 and 2 together and come up with 5. As last years game at the MCG between the two clubs was a huge success they were more than likely discussing another game for a couple of years time.
