I'm sorry, but I never said they shouldn't be offended by it
Meanwhile in a previous post;
No one should be offended....its humour.
It's not up to you or anybody else to tell people what they should & shouldn't be offended by, I guess you realise that as you have already tried to back track out of the latter statement.
I would go dressed a a suicide bomber just to p1ss off this PC brigade.
Labeling people as part of this 'PC brigde' simply because they're offended by this and/or understand that others may find it offensive is simply ignorant and immature. You also seem to have suggested that people who are offended by this and/or understand that others may find it offensive have been brainwashed by the media, yet you, in your infinite wisdom are free of such indoctrination. All hail Marko.
In all honesty, I don't care about what Chris Smalling did, he and his actions are insignificant to me and I'm not offended by it, however, it was terrible judgement on his part, being that he's in the 'public eye' and represents a giant footballing institution (which certainly won't be pleased by this) with millions of fans all over the world, some of whom are well within their rights to find this offensive.
Right, I apologise, for saying i didn't tell people they shouldn't be offended but i am afraid you have misinterpretted what i was trying to get across, or perhaps I failed to put it across correctly.
What i am trying to say is the following:
In MY OPINION, there is nothing to be offended about. I am not labelling anyone who is offended by this as the PC Brigade, however, many many people have fallen into that trap. I never said anyone has to agree with me. However, there are numerous instances of the media blowing things out of proportion.
On Jan 3rd there was a story of Jermaine Pennant going to one of these parties dressed as Osama Bin Laden, yet we had no threads or disgust about that. Now that it is a Man Utd player, I cannot help but feel that some of this disgust and shock arises from that fact alone. Secondly, just because Smalling plays for united does not mean he should not have a private life or the right to wear what he wants when he wants.
There aren't many people going to dress party's as victims of the holocaust but there are many going as Hitler, George Bush, Blair, Mugabe, soldiers etc. All of those listed above had been responsible for peoples deaths, however, as always there is a humorous side to these people too and it is something that satire exposes very very well.
Seeing that Smalling was armed with Jaggermeister and Red bull I think it is plainly obvious that he was playing on the Jagger bomb idea.
Where is all the outrage about "Ahmed the dead terrorist", Jeff Dunhams character of global popularity? Where is the outrage at the jokes about Arab people, sterotyping them as terrorists? Where is the outrage at jokes about Jews stereotyping them as greedy? Where is the outrage at all the jokes about Africans? No where. However, this particular theme, the joke about a suicide bomber has raised eyebrows because that's what suits somebody.
Now, reffering to the last part of your post, about Smalling being in the "Public eye"...well guess what, Tony Blair was in the public eye, George W. Bush was in the public eye much more so than Chris Smalling and they had no problem sending people into war under false pretenses and with stories about weapons of mass destruction. They sent people to die, without this much outrage on here. Yet Chris Smalling has played a joke, at a fancy dress party, and now he must be the sacrificial lamb. I don't think so.
Once again, I am not labbeling people who are opffended by this as the PC brigade, although, IMO, they are mighty close to falling in that bracket along with those who called Suarez a racist yet said nothing about Terry.
Think about what kind of jokes "British humour" utilizes regularly about Hitler, Jesus etc. Monty Python ring a bell? Those were all fan favourites making fun of some very serious topics. In my opinion that's fine, but then the same people who laughed at those jokes have no right whatsoever to come on here and slate Chris Smalling for the way he dressed at a fancy dress party...
