I agree that it was dissapointing to lose to Southampton at home but they are absolutely flying and the results that I mentioned in my previous post show that teams better than ours have dropped points at home to teams inferior to them on paper. I think there is a lot of quality in the top half of the Premiership at the moment and home home bankers are becoming more and more of a rarity. Despite that we have only really tripped up once so far.

fair point Ben about other teams dropping points, but I'm not sure whether there's a lot of quality. The teams are very close together it seems, but I'd say that's perhaps due to a dip in quality at the very top.
Faz - not sure what your point is in relation to this thread.

The important thing to remember is we are not dropping points like last season, we are beating the teams we are expected to win against.

Yes, which is an improvement on recent seasons, but it is what we expect - hence par. In previous seasons we've been below par in that we lose games we expect to win. If we get a couple more wins against the richer clubs, esp away from home, then yes we'll be in dreamland.

Manure and the Arse were both crap today. I say we shouldn't be frightened by anyone this season. Three points from Everton would be delicious, as they would consolidate our position and raise morale before the upcoming "difficult" away games.

It's nice to see us near the top of the table again, in and around the top 4, winning games we should be winning and playing some good and sometimes great stuff too.
However, I suggest that if we looked at it like a school teacher the report would read something like:
'B+. a good start to the season but wouldn't have expected anything less. Needs to eradicate the minor slip ups and beware as the tougher exams lie ahead of us. Well done so far, but need to keep focussed and keep it going'.
I say that on the basis that all our wins are one's we'd expect except the home win over you know who. We got 2 points more than we perhaps hoped for at best. On the otherside, we dropped 3 points at home to Southampton and I reckon 2 more points away to Newcastle - esp as they were down to 10 men and we were winning. I think the other results are fair hence suggest we have net 3 points less than we could reasonably have expected to have got by now. Mighty funny you should make this thread. Wasnt it you who I was talking to last year when I was doing my uni project and kept stopping for smoking breaks during?? Well just to let you know I got an A in the end . The system works!

I'd like to see this scoring system used to show how the rest are getting on. Man city Man united Arsenal Chelsea Spurs Arsenal: A-. United and Villa are blemishes, but they've been excellent otherwise. City: C United: c+ Chelsea: B- Spurs: C+

I'd give us an A-. We have only lost to Arsenal and a Southampton side that is playing very very well while we have picked up nearly maximum points in the games we would expect to win. I say games that we expect to win, but these are the games than in recent years we have tripped up in and also the games that many of the teams around us have also dropped points (man u home to west brom, spurs home to west ham/newcastle, chelsea home to west brom etc).
Plenty of very tricky games coming up that will really test us but so far so good. This was true under Houllier and Rafa, but is not true for BR, in fact it's quite the opposite. Full description here http://basstunedtored.com/2013/11/10/brendans-bottom-half-beatings/
