Right Lads, next time the Gerry Marsden interview is on LFC watch it for full details.

However, we started singing it after it was in the Top 10 in 1963. The DJ at Anfield used to play the Top 10 before every home game & the Kop used to sing all the tunes, but when YNWA dropped out of the Top 10 the crowd carried on singing it & still do to this day. Celtic & I think Bruges from Belgium started singing it around the same time, probably for the same reason but couldn't give you a definitive answer.

I doubt the Catholic link is correct, cos I was brought up being told that Everton were the Catholic club!

The Glaswegians are very similar to the Scousers with their wit & you'll find they are visit each others city's a lot.

No I think Liverpool are the protestant club and Everton the catholic. Celtic catholic at Glasgow.

I think its more to do with King Kenny and general friendship

not sure how i know but this is the truth. ( im almost sure). the song originates from an old musical film called Carousel. its the final song on the film.
although its hard to believe, Celtic did sing it 1st. (sorry guys) and i think by some time before us too.
like mentioned before we took it under our wing when local group gerry and the pacemakers released it. As you all know the kop at that time used to sing chart songs like the beatles "we love you".
think we took this song more to hearts because how good the words are and how great it sounds when the kop belt it out. plus it came along when we started to be sucseeful.
like i said not sure how i know but ive seen it somewhere.

don't be a hater. take the banter

Hate to add to the confuson here but think LFC were the first. If you read Tommy Smith's book (a superb read btw!) he discusses how Shankly played it to the team after hearing it. Shankly loved the song and thought it represented the club. The players started to sing it on the bus to games. A reporter caught wind and mentioned it in the papers. The Kop took it from there and it became OUR anthem.
In fairness The fields of Anfield Road has become a club anthem (although not comparable to YNWA) as well and that's a Hoops song...

I'm with Lucas21 on this ceb. Gerry Marsden has mentioned that Celtic started singing after we had, although you can never be sure. However, they did not sing it before we did as they have said they started singing it after it went to number 1 in 1963.

I believe Everton started as a Methodist not a Catholic club. But you are right about ours. Liverpool FC started by group of Protestants. Perhaps the charity game at Celtic Park (after Hillsborough in 89) in which the Celtic fans sang YNWA with our fans cemented the relationship between the 2 clubs.
