Ajax midfielder Christian Eriksen rejects move to Bayer Leverkusen

Christian Eriksen has rejected a move to the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen, the Ajax midfielder's agent has confirmed.

Leverkusen were keen to recruit the Denmark midfielder, widely regarded as one of the best young players in Europe, but saw their advances rebuffed.

The Bundesliga side were reportedly willing to offer Eriksen a lucrative contract but the 21-year-old is adamant he will only leave the Amsterdam ArenA for a club at which his sporting ambitions can be met.

His agent Martin Schoots told Voetbal International: "Christian will only leave Ajax on sporting grounds, that's his main criteria."

Zenit St Petersburg have also tried without success to lure Eriksen to Russia, while Liverpool are also rumoured to be interested.

At this point, I feel like if there's smoke, there must be no fire. I believe nothing about any specific target going to any specific club until it happens. That goes for Suarez, Bale, Higuain, Erikson, Cavanni, Anderwerweild, and everyone else.

To be honest, if these latest comments are true, it sounds to me like he wants CL now, not in a year or two, so it might not bode well for us.

He's an assist man more than a goalscorer.

I hope we try our best to sign Eriksen, he is a very talented player and would fit in at Liverpool. But for some reason, seeing how the Henrikh M transfer went, I am not so optimistic.

Fingers crossed that his 'sporting ambitions' are limited to the capital one cup and playing alongside jay spearing.

But at Liverpool he has a chance to play in the bestest most competitive league in the world (TM)...

Seriously though what qualifies as sporting ambition these days? Would joining a club that is already at the top and winning trophies be more ambitious than joining one that is on the fringes and possibly helping them to step up a level? Is it simply about how many winners medals you put on your mantlepiece at the end of your career?

It must be totally subjective and variable from player to player. His ambitions 'might' be to play in the EPL, hence Ajax's supposed comment that he's free to move to England...?
