Just a query for those of you(many) that believe by signing this player or that that we can close the gap on the top 4. Are you deluded?
While new players may strengthen our squad, it does not mean we will close the gap on the top 4. Every transfer window should be treated with dread by our fans, not optimism. The rich get stronger and we get weaker.
If we sign Aspas(7m) and City sign Fernandinho(30m), they are even further ahead. We do not have the wages, fees, manager or european football to compete for the best so we shop in ALDI while the top 4 shop in Harrods. Signing a City reject is evidence of that. And as for Mkhitaryan, if any of the other top 4 come in for, he aint coming to us. We go from a Fiesta to a Mondeo, the rest go from a 5 series to a 7 series.
Come August 31st we will be further behind the top 4 than we are now. FACT

Dalglish signed big money transfers and went worse in the league so spending big doesn't always work .

Exactly, and Swansea signed Michu last year for around £ 1.9M. Is he a Fiesta or what?

I don't even know where to begin pointing out the holes in this argument.
Spending mega sums of money on players doesn't always result in success, of course it helps but it's most definitely not a prerequisite for success. The point is to find players that fit your chosen system, scout such players well and to invest wisely at the right time in a players career. Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho are perfect examples of this and have both resulted in greatly improving Liverpool's squad.
Take a look at this for example, Coutinho cost Liverpool roughly half of what was paid for Joe Alen. So to reverse your car upgrade analogy, Liverpool downgraded a VW Golf (Alen £15million) for a VW Polo (Coutinho £7million), now let me ask.. who has been the biggest success at Liverpool and which of the two players has most improved the squad? I think you'll find that the answer disproves your original theory.

While new players may strengthen our squad, it does not mean we will close the gap on the top 4. Every transfer window should be treated with dread by our fans, not optimism. The rich get stronger and we get weaker.

That's not what you said though. You have said quite clearly, that City will be further ahead of us 'because' they are spending more on Fernandinho than we are on Aspas. You can twist it if you like but it won't change your original statement.
You'll like this:
In 2011/2012, QPR's net spend was more than arsenal, tottenham, everton, city & utd combined...
