Hello fellow Reds,
Was going to go into a whole long-winded tirade over Suarez until I read Dunk's piece. It said everything I felt when I heard that Suarez had informed the club that he wanted to leave. So my email will be one man's love affair with idols and the loss that they leave behind....
So I ask you fellow the Reds the following question:
Are you that bothered if Suarez leaves? I mean really?
And which players broke your heart?
As a player he is superb but my soul never really took to him in the way that other players I have idolised in the past. We are all different and will have our opinions but as a 37 year old man I have been heartbroken too many times by false idols.....
I'm a London Red. Born and bred. I have made the pilgrimage to Anfield on a few occassions, mind! My player love affair started with John Barnes. He was just an amazing player and left well past the peak of his powers so it was a nice ending for all as he still had a bit to give in his playing career when he went to Newcastle. He just wasn't up to it for us anymore. So he left with his legacy intact and is a proper club legend.
After that, I adopted 'Shaggy' as my fave player. Even though God was about, I just loved the unpredictability of McManaman and the wonderful solo runs he would mesmerise us with!
Alas, when he engineered what turned out to be the first proper Bosman (from what I remember) and we lost out on £12m worth of talent. I was gutted.
Next up for me was Owen. I loved the little fella and I don;t care what anyone says, the man was unbelievable during his time for us. Not as naturally as Fowler but just a machine of a finisher. And the Big game mentality that superb talents like Henry never had. The man conjured up big moments and big goals on so many occasions I lost count.
Again he did a Macca and ditched us and I remember that gut wrenching feeling once more.
Next up was the Stevie G scenario in that summer of '05.
That rollercoaster was the worst moment ever! When I read the papers and he officially had informed the club that he wanted to leave I felt like crying! Nay... Weeping, like someone had died that I loved!
The relief when he U-turned was immense and after that moment I said that nobody would ever be that important to me again. NO-ONE should ever be more important than the club. Simple.
Lastly, Torres nearly got my heart breaking again, such was his impact on me. Even now, I would say that for all his brilliance and magic, Suarez doesn't hit the heights for me that Torres did during those first two seasons with us.
So when he left, I was gutted for sure but I recovered much quicker and of course, we had Suarez in the wings as well!
Now that Luis will probably be off sooner rather than later I can honestly say that I don't actually care! He will be missed of course. The man is a magician. No doubt.
But at the end of the day, just like Gareth Bale, he can't get us into the Champs League on his own, let alone win the league!
So, if he goes, as long as we invest in two absolute quality players who are in the 20m quality bracket then I'll be happy enough.
So I repeat my question........
Are you that bothered if Suarez leaves? I mean really?
And which players broke your heart?
On a last note. As much as we love our heroes, the team must come first. We really need to not let these players become bigger than the club.
How can Luis Suarez become bigger than Liverpool in less than two full seasons? It's just embarrassing. We shouldn't be this desperate in my opinion. Otherwise, within 2-3 years, we'll have Coutinho getting way above his station and getting a move to PSG or something!
