If he goes then we're screwed imo. Sturridge can't carry a team like Suarez has sometimes, or Gerrard has countless times. He's good, but he's not 30 goals per season good yet.

This whole thing is all too familiar- when we sold Alonso and Masch, our midfield has never been the same. Got a bad feeling BR will just invest in more £10m players, rather than buying a £30m striker.

Just a thought but the part of the reason we can't attract top players in our inability to match their wage demands a lot of the time. What if we offered exactly what we sell Suarez for to their club and his exact wages (£100k p/w? not sure on that, just an example though) to a real quality striker? Would that be enough? Would we want a mercenary if it gets us back in with a shout of top 4? I'm sure if we did spend £40m on a transfer fee and offer £100k p/w in wages we'd be able to persuade someone of real quality to sign fir us, even without CL football next season- there are plenty out there just in it for the money, although, admittedly they might have to be a bit older, having already won trophies to give us a go.

surely the value of the player is irrelevant, Torres and Carroll alone can tastify to that. I think quoting numbers can be misleading, bot Suarez and Torres cost us 23mil each and both were sensational.

With market prices dropping I suspect some very good players can be picked up for aroung the 15-20mil mark, in Aspass its an incredible 7mil - this guy is very good. 40mil for Suarez should be more than enough to find 2 good players to compliment the team. It is not the end of the world as many see but I would prefer that he gave another year to get us in the champs league, maybe he will.

remember that Suarez through bans would have missed 19games for us in 2 and half years. thats half a season.

Sell him for £40m and recall andy carroll for nothing. We'd have sturridge, borini, carroll and aspas - 4 world class forwards. That frees up money to strengthen the team where it is badly needed, ie defence and midfield. Tongue-in-cheek that may be but don't be surprised if it happens.

I know what you mean, but you must admit, someone like Ibrahimovic, Falcao, Cavani etc. would be far better than what someone likeAspas will be able to manage.

A player's value isn't completely meaningless, if a club is willing to pay £30m for someone, he obviously has more talent than someone who is readily available for £7m, no? Not to say the £7m player isn't good, but he won't be as good as the £30m player.

Don't get me wrong, I like Sturridge a lot, I think he will be good for us, but he's not a 30 goals a season striker.

Original point was just a thought as to if we spent all of the Suarez money (transfer fee and wages) on 1 player instead of the inevitable 2/3/4, would we be able to get a top class striker..?

No way, Rodgers hates Carroll. If you watch every interview he has every done about Carroll he has basically said "Andy is a world class player, if he plays in a team which suits him" in other words he's good but he can fck off and be good elsewhere.

Pete: Berg, I'm just not cut out to be a good person.
Berg: I know. That's why the Lord gave us good looks.

I think Rodgers problems with Carroll are clear for all to say. From outside the club, you can tell Carroll hasn't been pulling his weight. Out drinking a lot. Too much ego and not enough intent to improve himself. There is no doubt he has great talent. If he improved a few certain attributes, he would be the unstoppable forward people think he can be. If, as he has continued to do, he thinks that getting by for the money is the way he wants it to work, we'd be better off letting him go elsewhere. BR, for all his critics on the Carroll situation, obviously doesn't see the desire in him to press for a place, or try to improve himself. I mean, he told him he could either stay and fight for a place, or leave to get football and in the end couldn't decide before we told him to leave for lack of motivation. If you want to do well at any club, at least have the drive to fight for your place. For that reason, we should all be fairly happy when he leaves for West Ham.

If you look at his stats pro-rata since he joined us, a 30 goals per season striker is precisely what he is.

Talent alone was never enough to get to the pinnacle. The rest is sadly lacking with Carroll. Jesus can't believe we are still debating this guy.

Tell me anyone of the most successful teams in world football that have a Carroll who plays every week. There aren't too many. Get the money in and strengthen. The £12 million or so we've been offered can get a serious player if BR buys right.

That's why I said 'tongue-in-cheek'!
