I agree we've progressed, and looking back, we were only 2 goals, 2 stupid mistakes and 1 awful ref decision away from being 3rd.
Cut out those 2 equalisers we gifted to City which should never have happened. then add another 2 points for that winner we scored against Everton which was wrongly ruled out, and that would put us up to 60 points, only 2 behind Spurs and Chelsea, which I think is were we should be right now.
The if next season we can learn to convert those draws against the likes of Reading and West ham into wins, then don't see why 4th cant be obtained next year. Your not wrong there mate, if you break it down all we need is a bit of luck and we would be where we would hope to be. Remember the first games of the season? The losses to Arsenal and United and that draw at Sunderland? We only lost/drew those because we had a new manager and a new system we were trying to implement.( also the ref robbed us in the united game) Then there's all the games you mentioned and that draw at Arsenal. I realise you can't hope to win all these games and you do get unlucky but with a good summer window, whats wrong with top 4 next year?

Switching managers every season has played a big part in the mess we're in right now - with each new manager comes a handful of new players and a new footprint, have 4 managers in as many seasons and you end up with a motley crew of individuals, not a team.
We can't afford superstars, we NEED to build a team.
Your right there, we need stability! We can't start changing managers ever season, we need to learn to tough it out or else we will never truly have a well working squad. However I believe BR will be granted this time and, no matter what some on here chose to believe, he's had a good first season and is in absolutely no danger of the sack.

I think yesterday underlined the issues we have had this season. We can turn up to a game like that and destroy a team and everyone has the ability there, we even scored a set piece. Then every other week we will play a weak team and draw/lose after playing crap.
Please don't take this as too negative though, I did really enjoy yesterday and think the manager got it completely right. Just that we can't seem to recreate that in other games.

Bit of a weird one though as the form book goes out the window in the derby, anything could happen so I don't think we can draw too much from it.

You are totally right about that, but, when do you decide that the manager is the right one for the long term? It is a difficult one and few teams get it right. Having a manager who is proven helps to a certain extent but even that is not a guarantee. This season has been an up and down one, even the much better second half of the season with losses against the weaker teams and sometimes at home. On the other side we have demolised some weak team, so very difficult to conclude decisively. Newcastle renewed Alan Pardew's contract for 8 years after a very good last season, was that a good decision when you look at this years results? Doesn't look like right now, mat be they'll do much better next season. Point is, you need to put realistic targets all the way, even within a season especially when you are not sure. I would love to stop changing managers as it would mean we are on the right track.
