Next to each opponents name below is the month in which we played them and the number of points we gave up. Add those points up (11) and add to the tally we have now (48) which equals 59 and puts us in 3rd!
It's really as simple as winning the matches we should have!
We were very close and I believe we'll jump the hurdle next season.
Aston Villa (December) +3 Arsenal (January) +1 Manchester City (February) +1 West Brom (February) +3 Southampton (March) +3

Here are the 5 games I think were vital to making this a successful season that we should have won but didn't.
Whilst those are good examples where we battered sides at times there are others that spring to mind more readily. We actually gave up two points at Man City and Arsenal so thats another couple to add on to your total.
In addition we absolutely battered Newcastle at home and only drew. We also lost two points for a perfectly good goal chalked off at Everton and should have got all 3 instead of 1 at home to Man City.
All this achieved with youngsters in the side and shortage of strikers and striking options from the bench until January.
What we have now is easily capable of finishing within 10 points of Man U next season. Even closer if we can actually take points off them too. The number of games where we have failed to turn up is far less than the last couple of seasons.
@E(SSO) - Sorry my numbers were off. My excuse is I can't think straight and concentrate on some Saturdays and Sundays it's an unusual mental lapse which I've inherited from watching Liverpool play :P
But yes add a couple of more points plus the 2 we lost against West Ham and we have a whopping 15 extra points and as of today (Sunday the 7th) we would be sitting 2nd with 64 points!
Those damn games against lower table teams are the ones Man U win.
