....Is the minimum goals we need to be up there chalenging for the top four positions. We currently have 35 goals for and 28 against. Compare that to united with 56 goals for and 29 against and you start to draw your own conclusions.

2011/12 4th. Spurs. 66 Goals
2010/11 4th. Arsenal 72 Goals
2009/10 4th. Spurs 67 Goals
2008/09 4th. Arsenal 68 Goals
2007/08 4th. Liverpool 67 Goals

Yes there are other factors that come into it, such as goals conceded etc etc, but i feel we have a solid enough back 5 when on form to compete. Hopefuly we can add to our defence aswell as time goes on.

My mind starts to wonder where the goals will come from.

You would expect suarez to score 20 +
You would expect Gerrard to Score 5-10 just from free kicks and penalties alone.
You would expect Sturridge to score 5-10 half season
Borini the same with 5-10 Goals (hopeful)
Then you start to struggle, you have sterling with 2 and maybe he will get 5 before the end of the season.
Glen johnson, skrtel, agger ,and enrique have contributed but not expecting miracles from them.

The overwhelming stat is that we dont get enough from midfeild. Lucas, allen,shelvey, henderson, sahin when was here, all fail and that area would make a hell of a difference if we could start scoring more regular from them areas.

Goals from midfield would certainly help but look at Man Utd - their midfield has scored a total of 4 goals between them. Our midfield outscores theirs. I've said before that the biggest investment should in the manager, not star players. That is what will make the biggest difference and is why we're so poor.

BR is accountable for his signings but FSG as owners take responsibility for lack of judgement at least. They are not infallible.

We have 31 now not 35, and I for one can't see us getting 70 ish, unless Sturridge and Borini really hit the ground running for the rest of the season, as I've said before I wont give up hope until the maths force it on me, but my confidence right now doesn't match my hopes.
Regarding our defense, we have a teenager at RB, an RB at LB, and an accident prone with an injury prone player in both HB positions, how anyone can say 'we have a solid enough back five when on form to compete' is beyond me.
Our light midfield has been both bullied and over-ran and so far have shown a decided lack of interest in getting forward with a view towards scoring goals. All we can hope for is Sturridge and Borini with Suarez doing what we couldn't do in the first half season.

we have 35 goals for. which is what i stated. not points mate think your a bit confused. We have conceded less goals than united and we have only conceded a few more goals than the other top teams at the moment. Say what you want about teenagers etc and out of position etc but the stats dont lie. We also have a good sucsess rate when it comes to chances. I just dont think we have enough goals from important positions.simple as.

22 games in 35 goals..

16 games left for another 35? That's like 3 a game....

Not a hope in hells chance.. our striker came 6 months 2 late

2.6 goals a game. Im not hopeful ill tell you
Not unless we can add goals from other areas or tighten up the defence a lot more

Yep 70 goals should have us up at fourth, not going to get that this season though lets be honest.

Next season however if we hold on to Suarez then you'd think 70 is achievable, i also have no problems what so ever with our defence although a good CB, GK and LB for back up are needed. Next season you'd think Skrtel, Agger, Johnson, Enrique would chip in with 15 between them, our midfield (Gerrard, Allen, Shelvey, Henderson, Lucas, Suso) should chip in with 20 - 25 over a full season, then our strikers should score 40 between the 3 of them (Suarez 20, Sturridge and Borinni 20 between them)

That would do it but i still think 5th in the next 2 seasons is the absolute best we can achieve unless we get at least 2 proper quality players worth £20 million a piece

horgo your bang on with what should happen but i cant see the midfeild at this moment scoring 25 goals between them in the next 5 seasons. We need top class forwards and an attacking midfeilder whos going to score 15-20 goals by himself. A mata type

You would have thought that with the addition of Sturrdige, Borini back from injury that we'll get more goals in the 2nd half of the season. The only concern is where exactly Sturridge will fit into and if Suarez moves out the way for him.
