What about christmas 2008 when we were top of the prem? Surely you must have thought we were in with a chance then?

I think if you look at when we did finish second under Benitez the team ahead was United, they did take there foot off the pedal a bit because I think that was the season they came within a whisker of winning everything they won the Carling Cup, got beat on pens to Everton in the F.A.Cup semi final and got beat in the Champions League final against Barca in Rome so no wonder they took there foot off the Premier League peddle and just done enough to win it, they were playing competative games right until the end, whereas we only had the League to play in as we got bounced out of all the cups early...

The 2nd place finish under GH wasn't really a challenge. As far as I can remember, it was mainly between Arsenal & Man Ure. Arsenal ran away with it and then right at the end, we pipped United for the 2nd spot.

Under Rafa, it was totally different. We were top of the league at Christmas, then blew it with a load of draws in the new year, but came back very strongly at the end and almost caught them - but didn't (for various reasons too painful to go into!).

I'd happily take 2nd place now - genuine title challenge or not!

think you know well before the season ends wether you are looking at a team capable of winning a League, capable of finishing top four or a team which is capable of getting relegated, you may get an odd shock but generaly you know...

I completely disagree for that season alone. I know it's easy for me to say, and you or anyone else may feel free to disagree but I thought we were the better team that season.

we had some highs that season like beating Newcastle away 5-1 also beating and putting 4 past Madrid and United however the lows were pretty bad too especialy after the Rafa rant, getting knocked out of the cup by a poor Everton side and loads of last minute wins against some poor opposition so over all good and bad and as we all know to win the league you cant be good and bad you need to be consistant which United usualy always are and were that season...
